Need help installing a driver for wireless Xbox controller
I'm running the latest Windows 10 with all the updates on my laptop. I'm trying to use the new model of the Xbox wireless receiver, the smaller rounded USB dongle, not the larger flat one.

I've used the older flat dongle and that one worked right out of the box. Plug and play. This new one, however, can't install the driver. Plugging it in, says it's ready to use but it's not responding.

Device Manager shows it under Other Devices as Xbox ACC with error Code 28. Automatic updates give me "Windows could not find drivers for your device". Same thing with manual install. I went to the Microsoft page with all the driver downloads and download a couple of different Xbox drivers. And yet, I can't install them - Windows could not find drivers for your device.

Windows Update gives me nothing. I tried deleting the driver and cleaning the registry with CCleaner, still doesn't work.

All the guides I've seen online keep reiterating the same thing - install the driver manually. Well I can't because it can't "find" the driver!

BTW, the same dongle worked perfectly fine on my PC.

Nevermind that! I got it!

For ♥♥♥♥'s sake I was about to rip my damn hair out trying to figure it out.

Here's what worked for me. In Device Manager, double click on Xbox ACC, go into Details tab, under Property select Hardware Ids. You should have 2 lines. In my case I had USB\VID_045E&PID_02FE&REV_0100
USB\VID_045E&PID_02FE

Go to the Microsoft driver downloads page and search for one of the ID's. 1st one couldn't find anything, 2nd found two versions of Windows 10 Creator Update, and two versions of Anniversary Update. I downloaded the larger file of the Anniversary update. Extract the file from your downloaded Update. And then manually install it under the Xbox ACC in Device Manager.

And it works! No more Xbox ACC, it's showing up under Network Adapters as an Xbox Wireless Controller, and it actually connected to my controller right away.
Thank you so much! I've been trying for hours to get this to work. I was having the exact same issue as you with the same hardware ID. This worked perfectly!

Thanks for sharing the solution. It worked for me too.

Here's the direct link to the driver that works:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2017/07/8884e7cc-6130-4803-9fc4-6b542f0f2b4e_1080d7146d5022210f192a3897e22f7c7f25caf6.cab

I tried almost all of the drivers from the MS Catalog and none worked for the hardware ID I have (USB\VID_045E&PID_02FE). One did, but was blocked - code 48 - and disabled.
This worked immediately without error at all.

After hours of searching and trying everything, I thank you for the direct link. You saved me a bit of sanity - what little I have left.
Cheers!

Thank you! I just purchased the Xbox Wireless Adapter from Microsoft's store, and it came and I plugged it in, and all three of my computers (MSI GT73 Laptop with I think a 2017 Windows Creator's update, I forgot), and two computers with a Z490 and Z590 motherboard, one with a brand new install of 20H2, the Z490 (main system) with a upgraded 2004 to 20H2, and all three systems got the Code 28 error!

I was about to call Microsoft to either complain or RMA, until I found this useful steam post. Now my Wireless adapter works perfectly!! Thank you!

Still going to call Microsoft anyway...

This worked for me! I had an old controller laying around. Nothing worked to get it working.
I already tried several drivers from that website https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com
but with your help I now found the correct one and that worked like a charm!

do you know about this receiver?

If it´s only works for controllers o may be used as standar bluetooth receiver for more devices.

I´m trying and no works for more, I saw it in device manager and appears like network adapter instead USB device or a gaming device

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
