Moving from France to Japan for a year, what about censorship ?
Hello all, Currently living in France since .. Always, I own a steam account with more than 1000 games, and AFAK, there's not a single game being censored here, which is nice right.

Thing is, in november, I'm going to move in Japan for a whole year because of work. And i'm a little worried about what will happen to some my games, I know for sure that somes are censored in Japan, like Grand Theft Auto V for exemple. Where a lot of violence, nudity and such are removed / toned down. I know that the same kind of thing can apply in germany, with games featuring nazi or extreme violence.

Since I buyed all of my library in France, once I go to Japan, and launch a game, let's say as an exemple, a game with some content removed because of censorship, will I be forced to play the toned down version ? Or will steam allow me to play the copy from my country ? Again, I'm not going to be a permanent citizen in Japan, only going there a year with a visa for work and then I'll go back to France.

The same question apply for region lock, but apparently games become region free after 90 days or so. So I guess I already have my answer

Also, I plan to buy Red dead redemption 2 once it get out on steam in december, but I will already be in Japan, and I already have the money sitting in my steam account balance, (so, in €) what will happen then ? will I be able to buy it with my steam balance ? Will I get the toned down version ? (RDR 2 on console is censored in Japan the same way as GTA V, so I guess the pc version will get the same treatment), would it be a better solution to ask for a friend / family to buy it for me using my steam account from france ?

I know that those question are a bit childish, especially about RDR 2, but hey, would be a shame to get the toned down, censored version when I'm only going to stay there for a year. :(

Thanks in advance for any reply

You should have no issues and you don't need to change your country settings if you are not going to be there permanently.

Hello, thanks for your reply, does that also apply if I plan to buy a game in japan ? (like using paypal which is tied to my french bank account)

Your Steam Store will stay set to "France" unless you manually change it to Japan if you are over there.
Store country does not change depending on IP/location but only if you manually do it.
So you just buy games as you always did, on the French Steam Store with your PayPal.
You dont need to use the Japanese Store at all.
