How can I tell what CD key I used to register a game?

I have a boxed copy of Civ 5, but I can't remember if I used the CD key from it or bought Civ 5 from the Steam store. It looks like I may have opened it, but I'm not sure. Is there any way to tell?

It says I already own the product associated with the activation code. Does that mean I used it or just that I already have Civ 5?

It should be on your account. And the key is not used.

My account says that the CD key was activated through retail on my licenses page, so that must have been the key I used.

Check your account activation history. If it says store, you bought it directly through Steam. If it says retail, you used a CD Key.
