Steam Games start to black screen
I'm not good with computers, and I have recently tried to get back into playing games with Steam.

This is my problem:
I have tried to launch 2 games through steam, Punch Club, and The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Each game will launch, but it is just a black screen, but I can hear the audio of the games. Punch Club I can see the game mouse cursor, and when clicking around the windowed screen, I eventually do hear that it's clicking on something.

Things that I've tried to do:
-Clicking ALT-Tab
-Clicking ALT-Enter
-Going to the launch thing, and doing "-window"
-Going to browse local files, then on the .exe clicking the compatibility mode thing for Windows 8, and clicking Run as Admin.
-Uninstalling, and reinstalling Punch Club (I didn't bother with Warlock)
-Checking for Windows updates, and installing them
-Going to my device manager, and going to each individual thing to update drivers, which I did, then restarted my computer
-Checked for Lenovo updates, and did a system check
-Tried to look for updates with my Nvida graphics card through the Nvida Control Panel

My computer specs:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i74710HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 16.0 GB
System type: 64-bit Operation System, x64-based processor
Pen and Touch: Touch Support with 10 Touch Points

(Shouldn't I be getting more information when looking up my computer specs than just that?)

I am on Windows 10, a Lenovo Laptop
I put my install file outside of the programs x86
Nvida Geforce GTX 860M

Help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I tried to look up how to contact steam for help, but it looks like that doesn't exist. Can anyone at least help me figure out how to talk to someone at steam to try and help me fix my issues, please?

Steam Support can only help you with games made by Valve. If you need assistance with particular games, post in the discussion hub of the game and/or contact the developer of the game.

As you have a general problem, it may have a simple cause and a simple solution.
Have you updated to the Fall Creator's update before the problems started?
If yes, try updating all your drivers. Do not rely on Windows, do it yourself.
If that doesn't help, try disabling resolution scaling in the nVidia Control Panel.

how exactly does one disable the resolution scaling? Can I do that for games individually, or will it apply across the board? Do I want that disabled for everything?

I went and made sure my nVidia stuff was updated. I tried looking online on how to disable resolution scaling in the control panel, but I can't figure it out. I saw an option when I goto properties on the exe file that looked similiar to it, and tried it with and without the thing checked.

Is there a discord to find people to help with these technical issues? I emailed the devs for Punch Club, and messaged them on twitter, and they haven't written back. I just want to play some games, but I'm left with just struggling to get them to work.

I'm not savy to exactly how to check or change it, but systems with 2 GPUs, which yours maybe has, the Intel GPU would need to be turned off through the BIOS, or in a Windows setting. I've never had a system with the onboard GPU, but I'm sure someone else here has and can give better info on where to look and what to do. IF that is the issue.

I saw online that my computer gets the barebones control panel, so I don't get that option for the scaling. How do I turn the scaling off?

This just worked for me to get Punch Club to work. If Warlock of Firetop Mountain doesn't work, I'll reply again about it.

In that link I followed the first replies steps.

You will need to start your own thread, with your own system specs info added, to get any proper hepl.

same happens to me, when i start a game, black screen, when i quit a game, black screen. the only fix that i have for now is locking the computer then enter my password again, then my screen goes back to normal.
I'm having that problem with night in the woods, and it's not a computer problem since the problem is being carried through steam cloud

I realize how old this is but I figured Id go ahead and put down how I solved this problem for myself. I cant say for certain weather or not this is the same problem everyone else is having but here goes.

the issue: the game would start but goes to black screen. however you can still hear the audio and even interact with the menu's with the mouse or controller.

the cause: for me this was happening simply because the game was launching in a different resolution than my monitor/TV. as a result, the game would run and audio worked fine but I got no picture.

the solution: If this is the problem for you, than all you need to do is right click on the game in your steam library, then left click on "properties". left click on the "launch options" bar. then type

-screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080

but change the width and height numbers to match your monitor/TV's resolution. click O.K and then launch the game.

Hope this helps!

The way I fixed this:

1. Go to the game exe file (go to Programs x86 > Steam > Steamapps > common > "game name" folder)
2. Right-click on the exe file and go to properties
3. Under properties, go to compatibility
4. Under compatibility, check "disable fullscreen optimizations"

I think my issue has been that the games run in a different resolution than my computer. It wasn't something that caused issue before, but it has begun to and this seems to be the fix for me. Hope this helps anyone out there who just spent an hour googling this.
