If you have multiple games that won't install due to not enough disk space, you can try this.
If you've ever used an external hard drive to download a game, it could be that steam is trying to find the same path to that hard drive, in order to install the game.
If the hard drive is not plugged in, then steam obviously won't be able to find that same path, the hard drive is not available, hence the 0 free space available.
Head into steam settings > Downloads > Steam library folders.
Right click on C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam, and make it your default folder, EVEN IF IT'S ALREADY YOUR DEFAULT FOLDER, or the only folder available.
Then try to re install the game.
Hope this helps someone out :)
My son has the not enough disk space issue quite often. Usually I can fix it but every now and then not. Before it happens again - what am I missing. I suspect that the fixes that empty the downloads folder and the default dl location are the main issue. I can empty the downloads folder but changing the default drive no longer works as it used to.
How does one set the default drive dl location or repairing the folder now since the update?
Did someone on steam mess up how much free space is needed? Patch was only 200MB, whole game 60GB.
Before that I tried restart, admin mode, clearing cache, clearing download folder, nothing helped.
I think it's because what @gonsi said - I didn't have the same amount of space free on the disk as the size of the game itself. Unfortunately I couldn't make that much room so I had to uninstall the game and reinstall it.
"Not enough disk space available to update [game], (Volumes/[hard drive]/SteamLibrary/steamapps/downloading/[bunch of numbers]/credits.html 2.0 MB required)"
This is obviously not true, as I have 770 GBs of free memory in my external drive. I deleted the "downloading" folder and restarted Steam, deleted the cache files, repaired my files and even reinstalled Steam, losing a lot of game saves in the process. Still having the same issue.
The weird thing is, I can play the games that are already installed in the external drive with no problems whatsoever, but the games that require an update can't be updated either because of the exact same issue.
I checked the state of my hard drive and everything seems to be OK. I don't even know what else to do... Help please!

EDIT: Okay I just realised that if I install a game in my internal drive it allows me to move all the installed files to the external drive, which makes no sense and proves that I do have a lot of free space. However, I'm still unable to update the games that are already installed in the external drive.
I have this issue for the past days and I've also tried every solution I saw in the internet.
Steam has a new update just today June 1. Tried updating mine and my download started to resume already. I think it's a steam bug.
My steam deck have a problem no turn on have a messenge,, fatal error need 250MB for actualization disk need space but I can delete nothing is boot
WHATEVER you do, just copy the Steam Libirary folder on a backup disk!
After that you can try other options to fix things knowing you might not need to redownload every game.
In this case "not enough space" error was fixed going to steam app -> view-> settings-> download->steam libirary folders-> making default disk the one which has games on it.
I also did "reapair folder".
Guys, also, buy bigger disks.
One great program is " Aomei backupper free" (i am still figuring out if it is a malware, but so far not problems whatsoever) - i make backups of partitions and whole system images on a backup disk, so if something bricks like this i always have a clean starting point. You can get mechanical disks like WD 2TB and backup on it as a external drive.
I have done nothing to get it to work sense it was rewarped to win10.
and yes there is read only on files so things cant be cahnge unless you are admin doing a update. ( this smell like UAC issue ) lost rights on the system with steam.
ps.
Reinstall steam over current to fix whatever it is that fiddle with its rights.
