Why do I suck so badly at FPS games
I'm looking for any advice that I can to help improve my personal performance when playing FPS games like Call of Duty or Battlefield. I come from console, and was actually really good on there. I know that some people would say that it wasn't actual skill because of the aim assist, but even in games that didn't have aim assist, I still did pretty good. I always held above a 1.80 K/D ratio from any Call of Duty or Battlefield after 2011. So I have the map knowledge and stuff like that, but I feel like my reaction time is sub-par on PC. Also...my aim. I can aim, but I don't know how some people snap on people instantly, or hold their sights on people no matter how much they strafe or dodge. I've been trying so hard and I can do decent, but that's it. I struggle to go positive a lot of the time. I've forced myself to use the mouse and keyboard for about a year now. Which I really don't like.

I have good hardware, a mid to high end setup of a GTX 1060 6GB, i5 7600K, and 8 GBs of RAM. I have really nice peripherals. So it's not a lack of hardware or accessories. All are Razer. A Razer Mamba TE, Razer Ornata, and a Razer Firefly mouse mat. I've found a comfortable setup with sensitivity, and have all the games I play setup to that sensitivity. Eight inches gives me a full 360 degree turn. And I'm playing at 1,000 DPI. All the games I play stay well over 60 FPS and I have v-sync off just to make sure I'm not getting as much lag. My internet is decent, and my ping is around an average of 40. I can't piece together why I'm so bad. I am playing on a TV, but it's a small 24 in. Vizio at 60Hz. It list a 5m response time, but I'm not so sure about that. I just can't figure out what's making it so hard for me to do good. I understand that people that play on PC pay more to play games, so they normally are more dedicated and pay more attention, but I'm trying really hard too. It sucks because I spent so much money on my PC (upwards of $1,200.00 when all parts are factored in) and I can't even enjoy my favorite genre of games anymore. It's very discouraging and makes me want to play FPS games on the console instead, but I haven't given in yet. I've gotten better over the course of a year, but I figured I'd be a lot better than I am at this point. Anyways, sorry if the post is super long, but I just wanted to make sure people could understand my situation and see if you guys have anything insightful of helpful to offer from it. Thanks.

As ppl have said you need to work on what suits you, 1000dpi is high? I use 3500 dpi, mouse is very quick, tried all weapons etc to find which are best for me and the way i play. Camping is ok for the right weapon but if your aiming is poor your going to get killed a lot. Best way to play ww2 i find is run and gun, its fun and moving targets are harder to hit. And as in all things, practice is always good, you can only get better.

Note that its entirely possible you're hitting a skill wall with regards to your skillset. What I mean is that your aim assist on consoles might ahve put you 'over hte edge' with regards to how you perform in games

What do I mean? Lets say we have 2 players. Player A has a 30% hit rate, while Player B has a 40% hit rate. We enable auto-aim for them which for sake of simplicity adds 10% to their respective hitrates.

Player A has a modes K/D ratio increase from say 0.5 to 0.7. Not bad.

Player B has a giant leap from 0.7 to 1.2! Why is this?

With PlayerB the 10% increase gets the player over a specific 'hump' in difficulty. With a 50% hit rate, now instead of just greviously injuring opponents he's much more likely to kill them outright. A dead opponent doens't fire back which increases their survivability which leads to a much higher bump in k/d ratios than the lower tiered player with a similar % increase in hit rate. This is just a theoretical example, but you can see where specific skill bumps can get you in a much better position.

I'd say in addition to the advice above, maybe just stop looking at K/D ratios as a marker for improvment or your marker for skill. Its entirely possible you may never get over that 'hump'. But that's not necessaritly a bad thing. For myself, I am well OLD to put it midly. I won't be able to compete with the twitch reflexes of players who are younger or players who just play more of a game than I can invest in. Therefore I tend to not care about K/D but instead play to my other strengths. I dont need to kill players to help my team. i can compete and win in other ways that play to the strenghts of my abilities, such as better situational awareness, etc, rather than trying to 'win' against K/D ratios.

the number 1 thing : find your sensitivity for me its 1600-1700 dpi ( roccat swarm) , if its above i miss alot shots in TF2 and can barely snipe in most games

next , you need a mousepad , i have a nice Roccat mousepad that has some rubber on 1 side and some textile on the other side without one it might be hard

and one last tip , dont worry if you dont always win a round , i have days where i completely suck in TF2 aswell , and right now due to taking a long break i just suck completely unless i play Demo ( the Press M2 to win Class)

I guess that you guys are right, it's just practice at this point. It's just a tough hill to climb. But I do appreciate all of the advice that you guys are giving. It does mean a lot, and I'm happy to run into nice people on Steam.

1000dpi seems really high to me, but it does depend on the person.

Only advise to really give you is to keep practising and don't use vsync.

Wait why not use vsync

Another tip- the best camouflage of all is STILLNESS..:)....As soon as a guy starts moving he stands out a mile, so stay still as much as possible if you can.

V-sync can cause lag on your mouse.

I think most players (on the KOTH srvers at least) play just for FUN, and I'm one of them..:)...
For example yesterday our Green team were trailing badly to the Reds and Blues, and we hadn't a hope of winning, but none of us were griping or getting uptight, we just kept having fun with lots of laughing and chat.
I kiiled 3 tanks and a couple of Kamyshes with my Titan AT which racked up 7500 points for me, so it was certainly a fun session for me..:)
