Controller Double Tapping
So I use and XBOX ONE wired controller for most games that embrace it on steam. And it seems to work just fine for the most part, but there is a problem it seems to have.

When you press "A". It thinks you pushed it twice. So when I try to perform a regular jump, I double jump, when I try to sell an item, I sell it and the item below it. It's frustrating.

Things get more confusing though, as it does not happen a good 80/90% of the time, but once in a awhile it will do said problem. So for every fix I find, it can take awhile before I learn that it did in fact, not work.

Still more confusing, on my current pc, it's "A". But on my older laptop, I have the same issue, with the triggers... AND FarCry 4 seems to not be affected on either device.

So we have a controller, then when it first is plugged into a computer, decides what button will activate twice when pushed once, for steam specifically.

And I don't know if FarCry 4 is just immune or if it's because it launches thru uplay after launching in steam.

-Known games this affects for me are Skyrim, Hand of Fate, Hollow Knight. Not really played much else with a controller.

If I find a fix for this I will put it here as well for anyone else with this problem.

As a general side note, I saw that this was happening before on some forum or other, people complained more directly at steam, and it was apparently patched. Might be unrelated but figured I would mention it.

If you have the Xbox Controller Configurator enabled, try disabling it and retrying.
[Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings]

Just tried that, to no avail. I was also fiddling about with the layout options on the controller to try and fix it, no luck with that either.

The reason I asked was because I remember having had double-input and "ghosting" in the sense that if the controller would be replugged, it would be assigned as Player 2 as long as Steam was turned on (and something else dominating the Player 1 slot.)

The configurator was the reason for me though, ensure you've rebooted your controller since disabling it.

You could try some DRM-free game through its executable (that you own on Steam)

Idea being moreso that you could try launching a game through Steam and off-Steam and see if the controller behavior is the same.

Tried different usb ports, unplugging and plugging it back in so it should have turned off.
Also reset steam a few times. Still nothing.

I will look into what happens when launching something out of steam, though that won't fix the problem as most of my games are of course on steam. But it is still worth checking for science.

Any luck on this? I've had 6 Elite controllers with this problem Returning everyone I get right out of the box or from Microsoft. So ridiculous.

Sadly no, for the most part I just started rebinding a to a different button, so jump is now y on most of my games. It's not great but learning to dela with it is better then the problem itself. I will pm you or something if I find something though.

So did it happen for non-steam games? There has to be ones that are free to try, forza on the microsoft store perhaps.
Shut down Steam just to be sure, before connecting anything. Don't start it with the PC just to make sure if Steam is the cause or not.

For sure from steam, I tried it on games that are not on steam and it works fine. Now whether it's steam or the controller causing the issue I can't say, only that it only affects steam games,

And you have all options for Steam controllers disabled still? Try the latest Steam beta and see if that does it, if not make a bug thread on the Steam beta forums.

Was this ever fixed? I'm getting this in Subnautica atm with an xbox one wireless controller.
Happens approx 1:10 times. It's especially frustrating in subnautica as I end up consuming 2 health kits/food/water instead of just the one. It also does this when using the fabricator, I'll push "A" to use the fabricator and I'll instantly be 2 menus down.

Its hard to replicate the problem on other games as the game has to allow quick firing of the A button. Ie a game that has A for jump (without double jump) would prob still only jump once even if the A button is firing twice.

In your Steam library, right click game and go to properties. Under General find Steam Input Per-Game Setting set to Force off. See if that fixes your problem,

Under controller configuration, select the setting for the A button (or the button having issues), under activator type, give a minimum value (non zero) to fire end delay and it should fix this

After months of frustration, I cannot express how thankful I am for your solution. I can finally play rocket league without trying to throw my controller out the window after every single match.

Sorry, where is that? I am having the same problem and trying to fix it.

So I know this is a necro post, but in my struggle with this issue since my corded X360 controller finally died, I found this post repeatedly while searching for the "A button double tap" issue, so I know someone out there will make use of this update. Finding where "controller configuration" is was not particularly intuitive, but here's how to find it in March 2020:

- Right-click the game having issues
- Go to Manage > Controller Configuration
- Click the Y/X/B/A button group, bottom right corner for me
- Click the A button
- Add just a tiny bit to the slider for Fire End Delay
- Click Back, Back, Done
- Enjoy

Edit: Ohhh, March 14. Not March 2014. Not so much a necro post then. But it was necro'd before that, so eh. Call it what you want. The information is here now. :)
