EAX on Realtek HD
Apparently Realtek HD cards can support some form of EAX. How do I do it? Creative ALChemy used to work but now it won't run due to not having right hardware or something. I know OpenAL works, but it doesn't support some games.

i thought EAX was for creative soundblaster hardware only? correct me if i am wrong...

It's meant to be, but apparently, from what I've read so I could be mistaken, some Realtek HD cards support up to 2.0. There was also Realtek's own version of ALChemy released to enable options like that but it doesn't work for me.

Still wondering about this myself. When listening to foot steps behind you versus in front of you EAX makes the sounds slightly different. So if you have stereo headphones you could still tell the positioning of the player. Realtek does not provide this functionality which is why its important. I could not get Realtek's version of ALCemy working either. It's called "3D SoundBack Beta 0.1".
