Let's say I have a 1920x1080 monitor but my in-game settings are 1280x1024 - even though the screen will be filled when I'm playing the game because the image is stretched to fit into the screenspace of the monitor; the screenshot when taken will only capture the amount of pixels rather than the full ratio. So a) find out the native aspect of the monitor and then b) make sure your settings match this then your screenshots will fill the screen of the monitor you are using.
If your in game screen resolution is 1280 x 960 which is a 4:3 aspect ratio, then it will continue to take screenshots like that.
If your monitor native screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 which is a 16:9 aspect ratio, then I suggest you change your in game screen resolution to match your monitor native screen resolution 1920 x 1080, then when you take a screenshot it will be in a 1920x1080 resolution instead of your 1280 x 960.
Does that make sense to you? In short we're telling you to use your monitor native screen resolution in game, not whatever screen resolution you had last with your "Square monitor".
