Any games that a GTX 1060 3GB doesn't run well at 1080p?
I have an i5 6500, 16 GB DDR4 ram and a GTX 960. I like the 1060 3gb over the RX 480 4GB because it's a bit cheaper and a bit faster in the games that most interest me (Witcher 3, GTA5, Fallout 4). I plan on getting this next week and keeping it for about 2 years before upgrading.

Are there any games out now which wouldn't run well (around 40-50 fps) at 1080p? It doesn't have to be maximum settings, just high/above average.

I had a GTX980 4GB (before i upgraded to gtx1080) and it ran out of VRAM in quite a few games. Don't remember which games, since i play hundreds of them. Pretty sure GTA V was one of the games where i had to fine tune the settings to stay below 4gb VRAM. But it should still be perfectly playable even with 3gb vram if you drop the textures and shadows from max to like high.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I'm expecting too. And at 1080p I doubt you can really notice the difference in textures.

GTA V perfectly playable with 3GB at ultra settings.

I think some newer games (Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider) might need more than 3GB for the top textures, but I think if I drop to second-best textures it'll be OK. Maybe cut a little on the shadows and AA, but I think I should still be close to top settings and get 45 fps or more.

Deus Ex:MD works well on GTX 780 Ti SLI @ ultra. The same 3GB.

I didn't say it never ran well, it was about the amount it required and not the performance. As far as I can remember, with everything on MAX, it wanted around 4.5GB. Not played it in a while, but I do know it wanted more. I have a 2GB card and it ran fine, so that wasn't what I was going on about. But anyway, I stand to my previous comment .

The fact that a game WANTS or is able to use a certain amount of VRAM doesn't mean it NEEDS it to run well. I remember somebody benchmarked COD:Advanced Warfare few years ago and it used 8 gb of RAM, but it still ran great on 2 GB cards.

There is no any specific VRAM amount which game will use. It heavily depends on graphics. You don't think, for instance, that AMD and Nvidia cards consume the same amount of VRAM for the same game, do you?

I know that, lol. But you did say what games wanted more than 3GB of VRAM. All game will run with less, it's just nice to have more. As time goes on, with more and more games wanting, the minimum will also increase?

It's always nice to have more, but it costs money, no? It's a ♥♥♥♥ move by Nvidia to put 3 gb on the 1060 and 4 on the 1050 ti, but in the end, the card performs well for its price even with that.

Out of curiosity i booted up gta 5 to see how much vram it's using. After driving around for 5 minutes on 1440p resolution and mostly max settings, VRAM was sitting at ~5GB.

Then i dropped the resolution to 1080p and started reducing other settings. And in the end i have most settings at Normal (lowest), and it still hits ~3.5gb vram... Not sure if i missed some other vram intensive setting or something. So now i doubt if 3gb will be enough.

But then again. I have tried using a 2gb gtx680 in the past to play gta 5 too. And it ran surprisingly well on similar 'Normal' (lowest) settings.

3GB 1060 does not seem to be much different from the 6GB 1060 performance wise.

He even talks about the frametimes which is what gets affected when you run out of VRAM usually.

edit: Just get the 3GB 1060 if that is all you can afford and call it a day.

I do think this is what I was trying to say, lmao!

Hm, what else Nvidia was able to do? You didn't expect to have GTX 1050 Ti with THREE GB RAM and GTX 1060 with FOUR, right?

I played GTA V on GTX 780 Ti all maxed. How can you explain that?

Well, since the 1060 is more expensive, I thought it would make sense to have at least EQUAL the RAM (if not more).

Whats the point in buying an overpriced (out off date) card, when you will have to upgrade in six months
