Any games that a GTX 1060 3GB doesn't run well at 1080p?
I have an i5 6500, 16 GB DDR4 ram and a GTX 960. I like the 1060 3gb over the RX 480 4GB because it's a bit cheaper and a bit faster in the games that most interest me (Witcher 3, GTA5, Fallout 4). I plan on getting this next week and keeping it for about 2 years before upgrading.

Are there any games out now which wouldn't run well (around 40-50 fps) at 1080p? It doesn't have to be maximum settings, just high/above average.

Save your money for a full fledged 1060 6GB variant as 3GB is bottlenecking even on FullHD in some games.

Remember that poopstorm over the 512MB slow RAM on the Geforce 970? That was detected due to games heavily lagging when games used more than 3.5GB RAM.
Games like Shadow of Morder.
And that was released two years ago.

Not paying 25% more for 10% more performance. Besides I don't enjoy going over 200$ (plus taxes) in general. Yeah, it's annoying that it doesn't have at least 4 gbs of RAM, but 50$ (plus taxes) more is way too much. And most games which use more than 2 or 3 GB of RAM have texture packs aimed at resolutions higher than 1080p from what I understand.

this is NOT true this it was found by overclockers who tested the ram with high overclocks they noticed the ram speed dropping massivly when they tested the last bit of ram

and shadow of mordor uses about 2.5 and possibly 3 with ultra

I know it seems like almost a false economy, but why scimp $50+taxes when you may have to buy another card sooner rather than later, as the VRAM is being used more an more. In two years there will be more demanding games of which I'm sure you will want to play. Also, GTA V, if you want max pretty, you need more than 3GB anyway.

The 1060 3GB is a gimped card and not just by 3GB. It has less CUDA, etc. If you're fine with it then get it.

Gimped as it may be, it's still 80% faster than the 960, and one of the best (or THE best) price/performance deals out there. I don't think I'll change my mind about buying it, I just want to know what (current) games I should expect to have trouble with.

All of the games that want more than 3GB VRAM. As for it being the best, I really do doubt that.

Do you have the card (or have access to it)? Do you have problems with it in any games (and what are they)? If you don't, I don't really care about your opinion.

If you didn't want an opinion, then don't ask. Sorry. But yeah, I've had enough experience with VRAM and it's always better to have more than not enough.

In what game is it so bad to have 3 GB then?

Really? Can you provide an example? You said about Shadow of Mordor, lets look at benchmark:

GTX 1060 3GB, no doubt, provide less FPS. But do you remember that it has one less SM?

For me, it's been quite a few, but more orientated towards AAA titles. GTA V being mentioned, as you've said that's what you want to play. But then, there are many others, FO4, Witcher 3 and BeamNG to name just a few.

But again, if you don't mind lowering the graphics settings, none of what I say makes any difference.

I had a GTX980 4GB (before i upgraded to gtx1080) and it ran out of VRAM in quite a few games. Don't remember which games, since i play hundreds of them. Pretty sure GTA V was one of the games where i had to fine tune the settings to stay below 4gb VRAM. But it should still be perfectly playable even with 3gb vram if you drop the textures and shadows from max to like high.

You have no idea what you're talking about. This is Witcher 3's VRAM usage:
