I found ' Spacewar " at number 46 of the most played games on steam, yet i cannot find it on the store...
http://steamcharts.com/top/p.2

I tried similar names but i can't find anything that would have this many players.

Seeing Spacewar on someone's profile is often a sign that they've been pirating games. Does that make its 'popularity' any clearer?

Its a developers tool, but also often used by pirates by making Steam think that they play Spaceware while they play a pirated version of some paid Steam game.

Do you want to do that? It depends. If people see it on your profile then they're going to get the wrong idea and probably won't listen to you when you say you're innocent... so probably not a great idea.

So is there some article about Spacewar that I missed ? I've asked a handful of steam friends and theyve never heard of it.

All i can find online is that it's a game from 1962. If it works as a friend request deterrant then i might find it useful, but more than likely the one person that looks at my games list isn't going to have any idea what it is, unless they are in their 60's.
Maybe it was taken down for download and people still have it? No leads on finding a source to pirate it either. Atari port? That's quite a lot of people playing.

Nevermind. It seems that it was explained earlier. I thought they were saying that Spaceware is a developers tool, but what I have found is that it shows " Spacewar" if someone is playing a cracked game that they ( for what reason i don't know ) linked to their steam account, probably to play online I supppose. I don't think anyone would judge me like the kids in a d.a.r.e. ad in the 80s but I understand.

Spacewar, while used to pirate games, is also used by developers to create interesting projects. InfernoPlus, for instance, used Spacewar as a base to create a new online experience for Dark Souls, like putting Halo into it.
Spacewar! was developed back in 1962.
