Using a ps4 controller on steam from macbook pro

Can you use a ps4 controller on any game? If so, how do you connect your ps4 controller to a mac to make it play on the game?

Hey while we are here, I have another question that's somewhat related. I have a PS4 controller that I use on my Mac and for the most part it works beautifully. I regularly play SpeedRunners and Super Meat Boy for which I had zero configuration to do. I have purchased a couple of other games yesterday but these just won't recognize the controller, even though it's paired via Bluetooth as normal and the games say "Controller enabled" in the options. The games I tried and couldn't make work were Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead. Any idea how I can make my controller work with those? Thanks in advance!
