Gifting for delivery on a later date

I'm trying to buy a game for a friend for Christmas, so I don't want them to see it before then. It looks like there's an option to set delivery for a later date (and I put in Dec. 25), but then at the end of the checkout, next to "Gift options" it says "Your gift purchase for [recipient email] will be sent upon completion of your purchase." This sounds like it will be sent immediately, and I'm afraid it will go ahead and deliver as soon as I complete the purchase. Based on what I've seen in other posts, it seems like this is a relatively new feature; does anyone have clarification on how it works?

I'm afraid of the same thing at the moment, Googled for an answer and all I found was here... And that in Steam Support, they say to put it in your inventory to send it later, with no mention of the "Schedule delivery" option.

**EDIT:** After some deeper searching, it seems like the schedule delivery thing does work. More precisely, it'll send your gift on the date/time you wrote to send. That said, the fact that before the transaction it says "Your gift purchase for [recipient email/Steam account] will be sent upon completion of your purchase." is very misleading and that the Support pages seem to be not updated to the "new" functionality is pretty bad customer service.

What happens if the one receiving the future gift gets the game before the specified date?

This is one of the top google results for this question. I just bought a gift card to be delivered directly through Steam and saw no way to change when the gift would be delivered. Kinda lame, since a lot of gifts need to be delivered on a specific day.

I, too, want to buy gift cards for my boys but I see no way to buy now and have it delivered on a specific date. Come on Steam, pretty generic request here...

You can not send digital wallet cards on a scheduled delivery. Money transfers are instant and will not change.

But this topic was about game gifts that can be scheduled for delivery.
