TM (Telekom Malaysia) lag spike
ok this is getting annoying, i changed my internet package to 6mp/s per month and i've been getting lag spikes like crazy. Yesterday, i got 800ms in a Malaysia server. its been happen for a month now. I already contact TM and they said they couldn't do anything about it because they cant find what causing the lag spikes. Does anyone from Malaysia have this kind of problem and if so, how to fix it?

I'm also on TMNet.

Is it like, you play for a few minutes, and then suddenly got lag spike for about 30 seconds, and then it'll become normal for a few minutes, and then lag spike for 30 seconds again?

I tried and haven't found a way to stop it yet.

Its TMNet throttling something again. TMNet will regularly throttle connections to different regions for no reason. When TMNet throttles, there's nothing we can do about it except wait until they stop.

This time the throttling only seems to affect connections to some game servers in the US, but not all. League of Legends NA and Star Trek Online is throttled, but Twin Saga and Atlas Reactor work fine.

Just do something else until TMNet stops throttling. The throttling will usually last for a few weeks.

Alternatively, you could call TMNet everytime it happens, so that they have to log more and more unresolved complaints.

Yeah, because TMNet will randomly throttle Unifi users connecting to different regions for no reason. TMNet has been doing this for years.

The lag spikes are new and I haven't seen many people on low yat talking about it yet. But I have experienced it in a few (but not all) games and since you are having the exact same problem its most likely TMNet doing something. I'm hoping that this new throttling won't last longer than a few weeks.

But, an example of TMNet's throttling is Twitch. Twitch is permanently throttled by TMNet. Sometimes the throttling gets so bad that you can't even watch it on Mobile quality. Its usually worse during the day than at night.

There are ways to get around the throttle and watch Twitch, but its not easy.

The thing about TMNet's throttling is that they're pretty smart about it. They don't throttle everyone the same way at the same time. Sometimes my Twitch will be fine, but your's is throttled. Other times, your Twitch will be fine but mine will be throttled. They rotate it like this to prevent people from realizing that there's throttling going on, but since a lot of people use Twitch now they have noticed the throttling.

i think they only fixed certain games like dota 2, LoL,etc because many people complain about it and this problem occured since 6th april apparently :/

Well, here's the most recent things that happened to me so far with regards to game throttling:

  • 2 months ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic was throttled. It lasted for about 2 week.
  • After that, Plansetside 2's US West server was throttled. It lasted for about 1 week. I don't play in the US West server, but I just noticed that the ping to the server was high.
  • Since last week, Star Trek Online and League of Legends is throttled, and it still is.

I usually just play or do something else whenever the game I'm currently playing gets throttled. I'm used to it adi cuz back when I was on Streamyx before switching to Unifi, LoL was getting throttled off and on already for a few years.

TMNet throttles ranges of IP addresses, rather than targetting the games themselves, so it can seem random. One week you'll be playing an NA game just fine, and then suddenly TMNet just so happen to throttle an IP range that has the game's server IP.

That's why some games hosted in NA, like LoL, DotA 2, and Star Trek Online, are throttled right now, but other games hosted in NA like Twin Saga, Planetside 2, and Atlas Reactor still work fine. After a week or 2 the problem will magically fix itself, but its because TMNet is throttling something else instead.

Using a different internet service can help you get around the throttling if you happen to have something available, like your mobile internet for example. But becareful you don't accidentally drain your mobile data and reach the cap.
