Smooth Graphics at First Run, Choppy Graphics Later

Hello,

I am having a recurring issue with now 2 of my games that I am worried will happen more in the future. What happens is that the very first time I boot up the game it runs very smoothly, is very responsive with little to no graphic settings changes, and I have no complaints. However, when I quit playing the game, close it, and then come back later, suddenly the graphics are incredibly choppy and the game is basically unplayable. This first happened with Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army and has just now happened again with Divinity: Original Sin 2. The first time it happened I thought that perhaps it was just an issue with Sniper Elite and I would resolve it at a later time. However, this second occurrence with a different game has me very worried and also frustrated. Any settings that I change in-game give miniscule results at best. I am playing on a couple-month old HP Spectre x360 with 16 GB RAM as well as Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 and NVIDIA GeForce 940 MX display adapters. I have tried variety of fixes with drivers, both display adapters, and anything else that I can find out online. Nothing seems to work. If my other games were like this or these games never ran well, I would chalk it up to the laptop, but the sudden change in quality has me baffled. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
