Soldier of Fortune Special Edition Install?

I've been wrestling with trying to install SoF Special Edition/Platinum for 4 days now.
The autoplay starts up with the menus but when clicking the install button, it sort of just stops.
The setup.exe shows up in the manager but does nothing.
Tried 'Run as admin' and 'compat mode', nothin'.
Is this just a case of way to new computer trying to play a way too old game?

Come on now, just give us a working SoF on steam :-)

same for me. Maybe try installing it on a Windows 98 virtual machine
