Steam icons all blank
All the icons on my desktop from my steam games turned into blank paper, with the game name followed by .url after it. For example, Tyranny.url.

I'm going through each one and verifying the files. So far, some are fine, some need to be fixed. Even when it says all the files are validated, I go to the 'general' tab in properties and click 'create desktop shortcut'. The new shortcut is still the same as before, the blank paper, etc.

I've never had this happen before and haven't done anything at all to my drive or Steam. I haven't uninstalled it, moved files, nothing. My computer booted up fine and they all flashed and went strange halfway through the day, nothing happened to the computer. I tried a reboot, which hasn't helped.

Does anyone have any advice? I haven't the faintest clue what's going on and it's really, really aggravating, if nothing else!

if all else fails, you can create a shortcut yourself by duplicating the steam.exe shortcut and adding -applaunch # in the commandline (find the games icon from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam\games )

So, should I just stop verifying files, etc, and uninstall/reinstall Steam? Will that mess with my games saves, etc? I've never had to do that before.

Also, I did do that win+rar steps, it did open up the tools thing, so I'm assuming that Steam wasn't blocked or whatever. How do I undo that so I can see my library normally?

I honestly have no idea how to do that. I know what you're telling me I can do, I just don't know how to do that.

The games seem to open fine from my library, but even ones that I didn't have a shortcut up before have the same messed-up icon now if I try to make one.

(step 1, create shortcut on steam's own shortcut to make another , step 2 is go into properties on new shortcut, and then the rest is like in here)

i'd do full 1080p but it'd take soooooooo long to upload with my connection, so ... this should suffice

note: this shortcut is also pinnable to quick launch taskbar/wherever else you want! more versatile than the normal steam shortcuts [basically what I do for all my important games I wanna launch any time https://i.imgur.com/CWmeyPK.png ]

I can't do what they're showing because what is showing up when I right-click the new desktop icon is messed up as well.

You can see the blank paper icon, and then that is what shows up when I right-click it and go to properties. The entire thing is messed up from something, but I haven't changed anything in my files at all.

the app id from that game is 373420 if you create a steam shortcut and do -applaunch 373420 on the command line,it will work, like I showed in that gif. (you get app id from store page)

and remember, you create an additional shortcut of the steam client itself for the launch line parameter

Honestly, I just don't understand what it is I'm supposed to do to 'fix' this when I don't know what happened to it all to start with. The games open, but when I go the .exe file in my drive, it won't let me make a shortcut - I right-click, do 'create shortcut' and nothing happens.

It seems it's a Steam problem but I don't know how to fix it or what even happened that I'm supposed to fix anyway. I use Steam because I'm not the sort of person who can go into the computer files and do all this bizarre stuff, it simplifies it for me, so this is defeating the purpose on a ridiculous level.

I'm just incredibly frustrated and don't even know what happened to start with. I appreciate that you're trying to help with what you know, but I don't understand it and it's al gibberish to me, which is even more frustrating when I'm trying to figure out what the hell happened to the stupid icons. Even verifying the files and trying to make a new desktop shortcut from the game library results in the same blank icon.

your files got disassociated with steam because you did a windows update most likely, you must make custom shortcuts in the way that I showed.

i'm saying right click STEAM ITSELF and create shortcut like shown in the gif.

THANK YOU. That was the part I wasn't getting, to make another Steam shortcut to start with. The gif cuts that off, so I didn't know that they had done that.

sorry, my upload speed is very low, i did show right clicking on the steam icon though, which is why i also included in parenthesis the first two things.

Thank you so much for the help! I manually changed the icons that I wanted right off the bat and I'll try the other method for new ones to see if it helps.
