After Windows 10 Fall Creator Update, Steam Games Won't Play (but others play fine)
After Windows started bothering me every 10 minutes to update, I foolishly gave in and installed the Fall Creator Update (the one that adds People and a bunch of Xbox game mode options).

After the install, Steam-installed games would no longer load. I'd double click on the icon or click "play" from my library, brief spinning wheel, then nothing. Re-installing C++ packages and re-installing DirectX hasn't helped. Other games (Blizzard, non-Steam-installed games) run as per usual.

Here are my specs:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.16299 Build 16299

System Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model GA-78LMT-S2
System Type x64-based PC
System SKU
Processor AMD FX(tm)-4300 Quad-Core Processor, 3800 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date Award Software International, Inc. F6, 1/9/2014

Here is my video card:

Name NVIDIA GeForce GT 730
Adapter Type GeForce GT 730, NVIDIA compatible
Adapter Description NVIDIA GeForce GT 730
Adapter RAM (2,147,483,648) bytes
Installed Drivers C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_2d65b7647eff8c45\nvldumdx.dll,C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_2d65b7647eff8c45\nvldumdx.dll,C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_2d65b7647eff8c45\nvldumdx.dll,C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\nv_dispi.inf_amd64_2d65b7647eff8c45\nvldumdx.dll
Driver Version 23.21.13.8843
INF File oem7.inf (Section002 section)

Any ideas? I've looked far and wide, and the only consistent advice I've seen is, "Revert to previous version of Windows 10!" I'm willing to do that, but would like to exhaust my options first.

Thanks to anyone with anything helpful to offer :)

Interesting: Civ V will play (DirectX 9), but Civ Beyond Earth doesn't, even in big screen mode. I'm going to try re-installing DirectX 11, just to see what happens ...

I have the same problem. Some games like "Dying Light" and "Rainbow Six: Siege" won't launch, unlike "Modern Warfare 2" and "Burnout: Paradise City".

Please someone help us!!

I have the same problem with Cities:Skylines. After opening a ticket on Paradox support page, they asked me to reinstall all drivers. They said, this Windows update would use older driver. I don't like this kind of answer:(

Is the Steam support team also reading this threat?

Help!!!

[POSSIBLE FIX]: I reinstalled the Microsoft Visual Studio Redistributable Package 2012 x64 & x86 and Repaired them and my games are finally launching again!

Thus, what I recommend you people to do is try to find what type of the Microsoft Visual Studio you should own to play the games that are NOT launching, install them and repair them (the repair part is not necessary, but I recommend you to do it to be 100% sure that it is OK).

Good Luck with this fix! :)

Re-installing the Visual C++ distributables that were *in the file system of the game iteslf* as well as the DirectX distributables did the trick. Just check out the folder for your game and look for folders that might include "distributable" and go from there. Again, you want to re-install the Visual C++ and DirectX packages that came with the game itself. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the above- but how do you tell which of the Visual C++/DirectX packages apply? I have tried so many other fixes but it's still not working.

For me, they were in the following folders:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2012

and

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010

For VC, use X64 if you have a 64-bit system or x86 if you have a 32-bit system.

For DirectX, use the DXSetup executable.

Hope that helps!

same problem here. War for the Overworld won't run. I launched Steam as administrator. The game loads. I have sound but no video.

Try disabling resolution scaling in the videodriver.

Bump.
Anyone found a solution yet other than rolling back the update?

I'm having the same problem with Ori and the Blind Forest (original game and definite edition) but there are no distributables in the file so nothing I can do there unfortunately.
The music plays, the cursor changes design, when i hit various buttons (escape, up/down arrows) I can hear what sounds like different menu options being selected but I can't see anything.

I've also tried changing various settings (by "rightclick of the game application in the steamapp folder-> properties-> compatibility") such as changing the compatibility mode, overriding DPI scaling... etc. but nothing seems to work

I went to the control panel for my Nvidia video card and clicked on the box that says "Override the scaling mode set by games and programs"

I'll join the woe club! I just purchased a new Omen computer and have been allowing it to update both Windows 10 and HP recommended drivers (some of which failed...this makes me very nervous!). I had installed Steam but not tested it out before Windows 10 updated to the Fall edition, so I don't know whether games would have worked earlier or not. I also would prefer not to roll back, especially since I don't know if games would have run before this update. So I'm trying various things, such as disabling virus and firewall (no luck), running as administrator (nope), and finally digging down to the actual game file and tryin to run it. That gets me the error that Windows couldn't locate D3DX9_40.dll huh. So a Google search shows a bunch of fixes for missing this dll, but I haven't pursued that line of attack as yet.

I mean, I BOUGHT this new system so I could play online Steam games.! If I have to pay the Geek Squad another $80 to fix this, I may be billing back to HP or Microsoft.

So, did anyone come up with any other ideas on this?
