Steam game download write speed limit

I recently found a way on how to increase download speed and jumped from 1.8 Mbps to 14.0 Mbps. But games were taking up the same time to download as when it was 1.8 Mbps. Then I found out that the write speed on the Hard Drive while the game is downloading is 1.8 MBps, making the download as slow as it was before. The Hard Drive is 1TB Western Digital 7200rpm, which average write speed should be around 80-90 MB/s.


Is there any way to make Steam increase the write speed of the Hard Drive while downloading a game?

No, just go to Internet Options in Start, click on the tab Connections and then sellect LAN settings and in the new window uncheck Automatically detect settings.

Ah cool. It's just that we've had far too many people come on here claiming that particular cheat tool can be used to 'speed up downloads' - utter nonsense. Unfortunately, the flu is stopping me from being particularly sharp today but I think I know what's going on.

Are you sure that you've actually got a speed increase by doing this? It does sound like you were actually getting a download speed of 1.8 MB/s (megabytes per second) which is around 14 mbps (megabits per second). If all your change has done is just change the units that it's using to quote your speed then that would explain things. You might still be getting 1.8 MB/s download which is why you're getting that amount of data written to the drive.

For example, couple of months ago (when I still had 1.8 Mbps download speed) I downloaded GTA 4. It was downloading for about two and a half hours. Today I've downloaded it again on my new PC (but with around 14.0 mbps download speed) and it was downloading for two and a half hours again. Then I checked at the download write speed and it said 1.8 MB/s. If the download speed is faster than before, it should finish faster. But that the write speed was the the same as before it finished at about the same time. Thats how I think it works, but maybe i'm wrong.

Yeah, it does sound as if you've just changed units somehow and your previous speed quote was actually 1.8 MB/s which is around 14 mbps. If you have access to your router's homepage then take a look at what that says your speed is. That will have been unaffected by any change you made on your PC and should help you understand what's going on.
