Your story sounds like you got a key for something you already have (hence the first message), but that key was also given to someone else. He redeemed it, so you're now seeing an already-used key.
When you get the "already owned" thing then Steam will proceed with offering you the download; you could have learned what game the key was for. But well, didn't happen, and the store should be able to figure things out, if they want to.
I mean even if it would be a code to other game I already own what are the odds that someone else would activate it 10 seconds after I tried it?
