Steam alters my fan speed, help please
Every time I start up steam my fan constantly turns on and off about every 4 seconds. It only does this when steam is runing. I tried over ridding it with SpeedFan but that doesnt seem to work. Any help?

Steam doesn't have anything that controls fan speeds. It sounds like the usage from Steam causes some fan profile you have set to engage.

Using software, like SpeedFan, isn't a good solution. Your motherboard UEFI should have all the control you'd ever want. And if that isn't enough, then go for a hardware fan controller.

I'd recommend having a hard look into all the possible applications that have control of the fans. This is a common problem with software control, as most users don't understand that more than one application trying to control fans can cause issues. SpeedFan, any motherboard suite (like Asus AI), etc.

It sounds like running steam is creating a bit of load and causing the fan to ramp up, it's normal and will probably happen with other apps like Chrome or Opera too... You could try adjusting in the BIOS to quiet it down, at the expense of higher temps. Alternatively you can get quieter fans... Whats your setup?

But theres nothing wrong with it doing that
And speedfan SUCKS, get something else.

I'm having this issue too. It just started today for me. Steam doesn't appear to be drawing any unreasonable demands according to my task manager. Nothing else causes the fans to do this.

I've tried restarting, reinstalling steam, running steam in administrator, compatibility mode, offline mode, I've cleared my download cache and steam web browser cache.

Agreed, I did the exact opposite, forced my fans higher (in BIOS for cpu, and gpu fans in MSI afterburner) so if steam did use a bit more resources I would never have known...

it is very possible, that steam has nothing to do with it - wasn't there a windows 10 update recently? I recall having to reboot either early this week or late last week...

I'm using an R3 on Windows 10 and having same issue. No other Software or Hardware changes.

EDIT: noticed lights on case are acting erratic also. Just started today, and only while Steam is running

im guessing its either a windows update, or steam update that messed with alienware systems.

Please note I'm on an R3, i had to download the r3 specific command center software. Still worked.

This did work for me also, I'm guessing some driver in the thermal controller package. Wish I had found that thread using Google.

Correct this has fixed the issue. just install alien commander center ( Boomer provied link in the discussion above for R4) and restart your PC.

On a completely unrelated note. im building a new PC soon. what do you all think 7800x or 8700k for a processor?

Avoid 7800x, it's a rushed design overall. Go with 8700k better overall, the only cons is less PCIe lanes (not many since you actually need 7900x + for full 40 PCIe lanes) and dual channel memory.

I have the same problem i have an R2 desktop tower, but none of the compononents are original
I cant install the commander center (It says its not compatible with my computer).
I disconected all the ligths (They where flickering aswell) but no joy it still revs my fans to 100% went to the bios and changed the speeds but still it happens.

Any ideias?
