Source games crashing entire computer on Ubuntu 17.10.
Hi, I've been experiencing full system crashes when playing at least two Source engine games. Half Life 2 and Portal 2, on Ubuntu 17.10.

On Portal 2, I can get as far as Wheatley knocking down the wall to the first test chamber, but when I jump into the chamber, the game freezes and plays the last second of sound over and over again until I hold down the power button to shut down my computer. Half Life 2 does the same thing during the firefight with the Combine Civil Protection in Route Kanal.

This is on a Skylake i7-6560U system with Iris 540 graphics.

Well the first issue is you are running Linux :)
Secondly a quick Google brought up lots of potential fixs that will likely make more sense to a linux user than to me, but I am sure someone will come along with actual good advice.
Good luck :)
As I've made the Linux joke others don't have to so you'll hopefully get the useful advice.

Firstly, is this a desktop or a laptop? It's somewhat significant because laptops and desktops tend to suffer different technical problems and for different reasons.

And secondly, are you only having problems with Source games? Or does the problem appear whenever you put the system under stress?

If the system is crashing under stress, it may be overheating or suffering an electrical problem. If it's only crashing in source games, it's more likely to be software driver related.

It seems to have been resolved by...something.

It was only happening in source games and if I had to wager a guess, I'd say the problem was in Intel's graphics drivers, and probably a piece that was in the kernel itself since I couldn't even get to a console to force the computer to reboot. Which is unusual on GNU/Linux.

The Windows version of kernel panic "BSoD" happens so often that people just figure on it being a fact of life, but when GNU/Linux can go years between crashes such as these, they're a far more jarring experience.
