finding game files on computer?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but i tried to figure it out myself first with no luck. I have windows 10 and used steam app to buy a few different games now. I have the desktop shortcut and games play just fine. But i cant find any of the game files on the windows program files or downloads. I do see a steam folder with the game shortcuts but where are the actual game files if i want to add a patch or use a modified skin on a game? For example im looking for something like this....
\\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\graphics\skins
my computer search doesnt turn up any results for the games folder.
I been out of the computer game loop a long time but i really miss getting a disc and installing a game when i pay for it... this just feels like i dont even own a game after i pay for it lol.
