No audio from HDMI on PC after installing steam audio driver
I installed the steam streaming audio driver last week and I don't have sound on my main PC from HDMI it works fine with headphones. I've updated my GPU drivers thinking that would fix it but still no sound. Any ideas? My GPU is a RX 480

What's the current default audio output device?

The current and only options are steam streaming speakers and steam streaming mic

I know this is an older thread but just FYI for anyone else having issues with HDMI audio after installing the Steam audio drivers, try disabling them temporarily in device manger. Do this in device manger -- not in the sound properties panel.

I have a Yamaha AVR hooked up via HDMI for 7.1 and ever since I installed the Steam streaming stuff I've had nothing but trouble. HDMI audio would distort wildly and randomly, but logging out of Windows and back in (or restarting) always fixed it. I've messed with it for months before I finally realized it was the Steam driver.

It must be intercepting all audio from other devices even when not actively streaming (just by having steam open), and uninstalling or disabling the device fixed all my problems. I had this issue both on the HDMI with my old 970s in SLI, and it persisted even on my newer 1080ti. I even got a second AVR (Onkyo) just to see if it was the receiver.

Nope, it's Steam's drivers.

Yeah I'm replying to an old thread but I found a solution for my problem just setting the device I want audio to come from to be my default one

Here I am running the same problem but I found a fix for me with my Sony AVR.

I actually had to go into my settings and change my "Audio In" From 'Auto' to 'HDMI' and back to 'Auto'. Selecting something as default was no cause or concern.

Once I did this I was able to once again hear audio from my AVR instead of Steam Streaming Speakes (Likely from using Steam Link/Moonlight).

This is a constant problem when having an AVR and switching between Streaming Steam Link or playing on my PC.

Little Voodoo magic I found is having an Optical + HDMI coming from my PC -> AVR and now I don't seem to lose connection.

Yep yep, I've very familiar with this one too. Steam Link output is only in stereo so when you change to Steam streaming the AVR suddenly is only getting 2 channels of audio yet it was expecting 5.1. Again, phantom center channel gets lost in Purgatory when this happens. The "Auto" setting on my Yamaha picks this up but like you said, only if I do something like cycle power on the thing. This is probably due to an interaction with Moonlight not telling Windows to change output modes so the AVR never get's the "kicker".

Welcome to Hi-Def gaming in 2023 :)

(On a side note you could probably just hit the Dolby/DTS mode on your Sony to force the switch)

Something definitely gets lost in translation in Steam Link/Moonlight/Game Stream.

My AVR was outputting Spatial (because it was being fed 2.0) PCM this morning after switching Inputs back to my AVR (PC/TV run off the same AVR) and was forcing my PC not to see my 7.2 Setup. Oddly too, was only letting my select 44.1Hz which I assume is the lowest common denominator for sample rates on Windows.

It was simply reseting the Audio In from Auto -> HDMI -> Auto again. So freaking weird!! Unplugging the HDMI didn't fix it which I thought was super weird.
