Paying via Paypal not possible
Hi,

I am an Australian citizen that has relocated to South Africa for work. No I am unable to purchase my games using Paypal.

I must admit it has been a while since I purchased a game. Really want to get Assassins Creed Origins.

Any ideas who will be able to help me get Paypal as a payment option?

The weird thing is also that a lot of South Africans also have Paypal. Seems like a missed opportunity.

Thanks.

Why doesn't steam just ask for USD from all non supported countries then? Because then paypal doesn't need to support those currencies

Steam does ask for USD from countries with local currencies *Steam* doesn't support. If Steam supports your local currency they want your local currency not USD. PayPal not supporting your local currency isn't Steam's problem they offer other payment methods that do support your local currency.

The South African Rand has been supported on Steam since around mid-November 2015.

Scroll down to South Africa here...

And purchase a card outside of Steam.

Thanks for that link but I tried all 2 websites and none of them allow payment via paypal. They want credit cards. If I wanted to use a credit card I could go directly via steam.

So it makes the concept redundant

I've consulted with Steam, Google and EA(Origin) and none of these services offer South African customers the ability to pay via Paypal (only credit card it seems). When I asked them for a reason they ALL replied that the limitation is Paypal. According to them PAYPAL doesn't support payment from South Africa to those three companies. I don't understand. My paypal account is set to USD and I've paid several american companies with paypal in the past. So how come these three companies state that PAYPAL refuses to offer these services to them from their South African customers

Paypal:
Dear ****,

At PayPal, we are always considering developing new features and we appreciate your request about the dropdown list in logging a ticket.

If you are expecting to receive payments in ZAR currency from the websites mentioned, they probably have no option for PayPal since, South African Rands (ZAR) is not yet a supported currency. This is because of the laws and financial regulations of each country. This is also the reason why your PayPal balance is defaulted in USD currency.

PayPal do offer services to any merchant however, other merchants may have a default currency offered to specific country they are providing service with.

Thank you for choosing PayPal. Have a great day!

Sincerely,
***

Me:
Origin, Steam and Google is more than willing to accept USD $. Since our accounts are already USD howcome we can't do business with them? I can pay in USD from my South African paypal account to other USA companies. So what's the deal here? All 3 companies state that the limitation is on Paypal's side. Your explanation of these socalled "currency support" problems is therefore illogical because all 3 companies are in the US. I pay other US companies with USD from my paypal?

Paypal:
Dear ***,

Thank you for contacting PayPal Customer Support. My name is **** and I am happy to assist you with your question today.

I understand that you want to use your PayPal account to make payments on Origin, Steam and Google. However, in South Africa, these companies have not started accepting PayPal as a payment processor. Also, even if you have set up USD as a currency on your account, your PayPal account is still registered to South Africa and its a South African PayPal account. Therefore, if you try to make a payment, it won't be possible as all three companies need to accept PayPal first.

Thank you for being part of the PayPal community.

Sincerely,

If that is the case then why do all 3 companies claim that it is paypal that is refusing to provide service to them if the customer is from South Africa?

Paypal:
Dear ***,

Thank you for contacting PayPal Customer Support.

I understand your sentiments regarding this matter. At the same time, it is the merchant who can decide if they allow their buyers to use PayPal in buying their products.

just like PayPal, these merchants' feature may vary from counties to countries. I would suggest that you contact them directly so that they can give you more option in making a payment in their site.

I appreciate your patience. Take care and have a good day.

Sincerely,

Me:
I'm going to contact all 3 companies again and forward all the content of the discussion on this manner in the paypal ticket. Note that if all 3 companies repeat that paypal is at fault then why should I take the word of 1 company over the word of 3 companies who agree on the matter and state repeatedly that paypal doesn't allow them to provide paypal services in the country

@Commissarr look here.

https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/api/currency_codes/#paypal

What happen is that your money can't be traded directly, if they don't have your local supplier, such as bank, or credit card company that supports your bank for your local currency, it has to be put on a 3rd party exchange before you can pay, that what happens. Your credit card automatically does this, you end up paying a tiny bit more due to conversion, processing from the exchange, then pays the process fees to send off for payment, basically you're paying bit more, that's why some retailers trying to get your local banks, or credit card company that supports your native currency so you can pay just a tiny bit less.

But that's only one of the complicated issues that retailers faces, sometimes your credit card, and/or banks set a unreasonable demand, also another of the main issues. But I can't say what it's like where your from, since I idk what it's like over there.

Tldr: Your bank doesn't want to support your exchange with PayPal, only your credit card company, but there seem to be issues going on, which why PayPal doesn't support your local currency. Your goal is to get PayPal to support your local currency.

Valve wants local currencies used for payments if that country's currency is supported on Steam. Always have, always will.

Valve left it up to Paypal.

So, Paypal is going to have to look into supporting your local currency.
