DiRT Rally: Both Windows and Linux?
I bought DiRT Rally for Linux (Feral Interactive), but it did not run well on my current computer. So then I bought DiRT Rally for Windows (Codemasters), as this – "original" – version seems to require less computing power.

Unfortunately, I cannot download this Windows version, because the Steam app considers me already to own DiRT Rally. That is, the Steam app does not seem to realize that there are two versions.

What should I do? I wrote to Codemasters, but they say the problem is not theirs, and will not help.

There is some confusion. Are there actually separate versions, or why did you have to buy it twice? The Steam store page seems rather unspecific, and only lists Occulus Rift...

And what exactly does it say when you are downloading it on windows?

The game should already be in your library in Windows, as you already purchased the game. There appears to be one Store page and product checkout for both platforms; Feral Interactive is just credited for the Linux port.
I once bought EuroTruckSim for Linux and tried to refund it as it didn't have the multiplayer mod. It was declined as I was over 2 hours, of course.

I later moved back to win7 rather than trying to play games on server software (slight dig at Linux Gamers).

Fired up steam and was surprised to find it installed the Win version instead. Yup very surprised but don't tell anyone.

Same deal maybe?
Yeah, that's how steam USUALLY rolls: You buy the game once, and you can play it on every supported platform.

However, Feral in particular has been selling ports outside of Steam, so it's certainly possible that the Linux port is not included in the Steam license.

However, neither of these possibilities would explain Steam having problems downloading the Windows version. Not even if the game itself detects another installation, since there is no Linux installation on Windows that could possibly be detected.

So, something is off/missing.

Describe the problem. If Steam considers you owning a game, you can download it. What EXACTLY are you trying to do?
EXACTLY (I hope):

I want to download the Windows version of DiRT Rally (which I own), but Steam only lets me download the Linux version (which I also own). The Linux version does not work under Windows.
Run Steam under Windows. Does it display Dirt then?

No. Exactly what are you doing? Steam doesn't have a "download" button.

Trippy. You are the first documented case of Steam wanting to download the wrong version. Which, basically, means I don't believe you.

What are you seeing when you install the game? Something like "wrong platform?" That usually means you have a 32-bit Windows, but the game only comes in a 64-bit version.

If, on the other hand, you really had to buy two versions, then there will be two distinct games in your library. Although that's an extremely rare thing on Steam.

There are no separate versions for Windows and Linux.
Steam only sells one license, covering Windows and Linux:

Geez... why does it put the platform icons on the shop widget, but not on the store page? The store page only has the icon for Occulus...
It does, next to the purchase button. The system requirements section is clear as well.

If I click the "Play" button and the game has not been downloaded yet (to the computer I'm on), it will be downloaded. Yes, you are right. It is not EXACTLY a "download" button.

I shall try to rephrase my problem again.

The problem is that when I use the Windows Steam app to play DiRT Rally, I want the Windows version, but what is downloaded is the Linux version – and that version just flashes the "DiRT Rally" title and exits. So it is not usable.

As far as I understand, both the Windows and Linux versions are 64-bit.
