Homegroup icon suddenly appeared

I logged onto my computer and a homegroup icon was suddenly there. I just got a new hard drive and I was setting up call of duty 4 and I installed the last cod4 punk buster update from pbbans.com which is pinned in the discussion section and also cod-4-x from cod-4-x.me(no - spaces) so I'm wondering if those are legit and I also have gaming accelerator 2 installed from steam and I'm wondering if it's from the app messing with things or if it's from windows updates I just installed. Just concerned because I just got this hard drive I hope it's not from a virus already. windows 8.1 os

The home group icon is entirely normal to appear in Windows.

On the desktop you mean? Yeah, it sometimes appears there. Not sure why. But it goes away after a while, or after a reboot.
