how to stop steam from spinning up my hard drive when it starts
I have nothing steam related installed on my hard drive yet every time I open steam I have to listen to the hard drive coming on, it takes longer to open due to to having to wait fro it to spin up and additional unnecessary wear and tear on my drive. I want it to not do that, how do I make it stop?

If you want to prevent a HDD of spinning up just disable sleep mode for the HDD.
It really doesnot make a difference for modern HDD if you let them run the whole time without going to sleep.
You can change the sleep settings for your HDD in your system Power Settings.
I rarely use the drive and I would rather it stay powered down most of the time if possiple to extend its life span. The reality is even top of the line server grade drives only have an on time life span of roughly 5 years, anything over that is borrowed time. I do no run server grade equipment so not even that realistically.

Could simply be your swap file then.

Why do you have you HDD set to idle? This isn't 1993, set it to never turn off.
Zekiran 26/ago./2017 às 23:17
It doesn't have to turn off at all. Exactly as Manc says - this isn't the 90s, learn how your hardware behaves before assuming it's doing something it's not supposed to.

Swap files are what is used when RAM is working. That's why it's vital to have *at least as much free space on your boot drive as your RAM*. Otherwise it can't actually be used.

I asked you politely not to come back

You don't get to ask people to do anything. This is a public forum.

I know this forum hasn't been touched in two years but this issue is still a problem with the steam client. I can assure everyone here steam has only ever written to my c drive, yet it boots up every single one of my drives not only when opening steam but what seems to be randomly while the client is open. my c drive has more than 5x the amount of ram i have so it shouldnt be reaching out for another drive to use as a cache (let alone all of them.)

I think its pretty obvious that this "issue" is nothing less than data collection, which is as shady as it gets. If i wasn't as invested in steam as i am, I'd uninstall and never look back. This is just as unacceptable as the ♥♥♥♥ epic has been pulling. (Message steam about this and you get no response what-so-ever...)

For any of the none believers out there who think Sinep simply made a clerical error; my drives are relatively old and on their last legs, (without steams help) every time they spin up i hear it (some of them even make a single click) so i know exactly when something accesses them. I assume it was the same for Sinep and if your drives are making noises you should be concerned about the longevity of your drives regardless of whether its 1993 or 2019. and if a program is accessing said drives without your permission, without any reason to do so and no real means of stopping it well that is a very big problem, one that should not go unchecked for as long as this one has.

I think its pretty obvious no one is going to listen to a word you say about computers and hardware when you say stuff like

Is based on nothing at all, and anyone can easily monitor their network traffic and see what is being reported back to steam to know that what your claiming is complete BS.
ItsFlashMF 24/jun./2019 às 11:37
if you don't have a reason why steam is accessing my drives i dont know why your wasting your time here.
ItsFlashMF 24/jun./2019 às 11:41
and as for my c drive having more than 5x my ram i was referring to the "swap files" mentioned above not being the culprit.
Joke 24/jun./2019 às 11:46
How do you know it's steam that accesses your HDD?

MY PC boots off an SSD, and I have my main Steam Library on a separate SSD. I also have a mechanical HDD that has no steam library, and it's always spun down unless I access it on purpose (when it takes 5-10 seconds to spin up).

Again your "assumptions" are based on nothing more then paranoia and delusions. Somehow with no evidence whatsoever you correlate a drive spinning up to steam spying on you and stealing your information. Despite the fact that you can clearly monitor your network traffic and see no data being sent out and nothing that actually supports that theory.

But hey, bump 2 year old threads to spread conspiracy rumors. I hear the lizard people are trying to corner the market in hard drives so this could be a plot by them as well to make your drive die faster.....
