Steam Big Picture, XBOX One controller and Windows 7
Hi guys, I'm having some problems with Big Picture mode on Windows 7 with my XBOX One controller (connected with the official wire).

1. The Guide button doesn't launch Big Picture (the option is enabled)
2. When I launch Big Picture, it turns itself in "global mode" (this strange mode which enables when you press the guide button and permits you to alt+tab whit Start button) and I can't navigate in Big Picture with the controller unless I go to the controller settings with my mouse (just going in settings enable the normal mode again but I have to do it each time I launch BP)

Any help would be great please.

EDIT: Tested it with a 360 controller and the home button is working as usual, so this is an issue with the wired XBOX One controller on Big Picture, don't know if it's only on W7.

Is the "Xbox configuration support" option checked?

That strange mode is the "chord" configuration, its a global thing that uses the guide button. It's the way you take screenshots for example. You can edit that config if you want.

The "Xbox configuration support" is disabled, I already tried to change the config of the "chord configuration" but it doesn't fix the problem, the One Home button can't launch Big Picture and the controller doesn't work in BP menus when the "chord config" is active (with any button configuration).

I think the One Home button doesn't work like the 360 Home button and BP can't understand this...

What about other stuff, does the controller work at all? Can you use it with any other software? Maybe you are missing some driver or need to update it.

Why is xbox stuff disabled? Have you tried to enable it? Is xbox one supposed to work without it? I'm not sure to be honest.

My controller is working properly, I play a lot of games with it. I have the lastest driver for W7 (for wired xbox one controller).

What is strange is that when I go to the xbox one button configuration in BP the "chord" mode disables itself and the normal mode is working (I can navigate in the menus of BP with the controller), then I can come back to the Library menu and everything is working, but when I close BP and want to open it again it goes in chord mode automatically. I think this is an issue with BP mode.

A friend just tried it with his xbox one controller on his pc (W10), same behavior.
The xbox configuration support doesn't seem to fix it, it does nothing at all.

Chord mode should only do stuff when you hold the home button. what do you mean by "chord mode"? Is it always on?

Is generic gamepad support enabled? Try disabling it and only use xbox.

What do you mean by button configuration? Steam has different mapping for different stuff. One for desktop, one for chords and one for big picture. You should try to set all those to the default if you changed anything or even if you didn't. Use your mouse to do this when the controller is plugged in

Which one are you editing and why? How do you intend to use this?

The whole thing about steam xbox support is that you can have a seperate button mapping for every game on Steam and you edit them on the game pages in big picture. You also have one for desktop and one global for emergencies (chords), it should only work when you hold the home button.

Not sure what is up with the guide stuff, maybe resetting the three non-game configs will solve it.

Sorry for not providing enough details.

I already disabled the useless stuff (generic gamepad support). The chord mod is active when I press 1 time the home button (in and out of BP), the home button doesn't launch BP it change the mode instead.

When I go to ANY button configuration menu the chord disables itself and I can use my controller like the 360 controller, but if I close BP the issue remains. I have to go to the button configuration everytime with my mouse if I want the XBOX One controller to control BP normally. Moreover the Home button doesn't work in game, it also activates the chord configuration instead of showing the Steam Overlay. This is an issue with XBOX One controller only, the home button is not working properly with BP.

Ah, yeah that sounds like a bug.

Are you on the Steam beta? They recently updated with some stuff that fixed controllers: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta#announcements

It if persist then make a bug report there.

I'll try the beta now and tell you if there is any change. Thanks again for your help.

Tested it with Beta update.

Now the home button doesn't change BP to "chord mode", and the controller works on BP when it's launched.

The home button still doesn't work to launch BP nor to access steam overlay.

So there are some improvements but some issues remain.

Nice!

You don't have any xbox applications or any other software running in the background that might interact with your controller somehow? Where did you download the drivers? What version do you have? Not sure if they include some software with the drivers.

The cords work normally? You can move the mouse anytime with home+right stick? Tried to reset the cord binding to the default?

You should probably make a thread on the beta forum if that doesn't help. It could just be that xbox one controllers are wonky with the home buttons on windows 7 or something.

If the chord is the 3rd button configuration (I suppose, my Steam is in french so it's called "Action du bouton guide", then it's not working anymore with the beta update, no chord at all when I press down the home button and move right stick.

I already tried to set all configurations to default.

Yes I think this is an issue only on W7, the reason on W10 is gamedvr but this application only exists on W10, I don't have any other app in background, maybe Razer Synapse but it doesn't touch the game controller (only the mouse).

Did you find any solution? Im having exactly the same issue (when i press the home big picture doesnt launch and the controller start acting like a mouse (right stick), i can play normally with the controller but in game i cant open steam overlay with the controller. I have a xbox one s controller and win 7.

@Mathcorex I think you should upgrade to W10, this will solve the issue and also it's better than W7 on multiple points.

Moreover you can play without wire with your xbox one controller and W10, if your pc has a bluetooth card.
