My hard drive is dying on windows 10 so i have to downgrade / change os

What do you think will suite best?

W7 - half-dead, but best for games released before 2014

Kali Linux is typically for penetration testing. I do not recommend using it for an every-day distribution, especially if you've never used Linux. You can head to the Linux forum if you want to ask specific questions.

I'd go for Windows 7 if you really think you should "downgrade," but in the end that's up to you.

Edit: Windows 10 (as pointed out by Snapjak) is probably better than Windows 7. I wouldn't change your OS if you don't need to.

According to Steam's HW survey, Win10 has 7 beat by more than 10%. Since this is Steam, it's relatively safe to say that as far as gaming is concerned 10 is now the defacto OS.

M$ attempt to broken it each month by bad updates (as other OS) - It becomes more and more difficult to maintain the system in an up-to-date and safe state ... and M$ constantly threatens to stop support, restricts the support of old and new hardware platforms, not all devices have drivers, and the quality of those that are available is terrible(but it's common problem for all OS).

OP will replace disk, and post his current config if he can't choose which OS to use for games... in any case, it is NOT XP, NOT, specific distros for IT security professionals and NOT MacOS X i.e. W7SP1 x64, W8.1 x64, W10 x64 or an Debian based distro with xfce DE

Win 10 is bound to hardware, not hdd. If it was activated in the free time.

If your hard disk is dying it won`t be the operating systems fault, best to sort the disk out/replace it and re-install windows 10 again.

Why Kali of all things? Not Ubuntu or mint?
Kali runs everything as root by default.
