Recurring problem with failed installations
Hi all!

For quite a long time, I've been experiencing a puzzling and annoying issue while trying to play "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth", an issue that has also showed up when installing "Prision Architect" and "Hand of Fate".

The incidence is quite simple: The game will show up in the download manager as if it has to update, it will download all the data and then, after verifying, the message "Missing file privileges" , "Update cancelled" or "Missing update files". From there, it is impossible to get the game to download. Uninstalling the game only leads to the same problem. I've tried clearing the download cache, repairing the download folder and even uninstalling and reinstalling steam, even on a new folder, all to no results. To be truthful, I've managed to finish the installation and play twice while trying all these, seemingly at random, as the things that worked one time didn't work the next. Also, the next time I turned on my computer, the game was unplayable and showing the same error message.

I've contacted Steam support and they've said it must be a problem with my computer, by honestly I'm not tech savvy enough to know where to start. I've found a process related to some intel drivers on my laptop, "igfxEM.exe", which seems to lock folders on the steam directory, but killing it has fixed nothing. Also, it is of note that I'm running everything as administrator.

Well, that is it. Thank you very much If you've taken the time to read this, even if you can't help, I greatly appreciate it. I hope someone has stumbled with this error before and can help, I've definitely not found anyone with a fix for this issue here or on Reddit.

That typically comes from a third-party background program that doesn't want you to use Steam. To make sure that's the case, start your system in safe mode (obviously with networking) and try to donwload the game then.

You haven't searched :p2chell: I've been posting what just told you for months, so there are several replies with this very information.

You could always check to see if the drive has any errors, or if it could be program related you coulf try safemode with networking and see if you can download and install games that way... if thats even possible I'm honestly not sure

I forgot to include this in the list of things that I tried, I'm sorry. It was one of the things that came "close" to fixing it, as it did install the game, but when I rebooted It claimed it was missing an executable and went back to the same state as before. Perhaps there is something I can do while the game is installed but before rebooting? Frankly, I know little about Steam's way of managing files.

I guess I lose nothing by checking for errors in the hard drive, thanks for the advice!

Yes. If the game installed just fine in safe mode, then I am right: A background program doesn't want you to play the game. Start the search with "security" crap. Firewall, antivirus, those are the types of program most likely to cause the issue. So uninstall that, reboot, see if Steam works then. If yes, add the whole Steam folder to the exception list of that "security" crap after you uninstall it or just switch to a product that doesn't suck.
