How does backup and restore work?
Gonna be getting a new PC soon and obviously I want to be able to transfer all my data. And I notice there's a Back And Restore option. In theory I should just be able to hook up my old PC to my new PC and transfer from there.

So here's the thing though. Does that only just transfer the basic game data or does it also include savefiles? Because my biggest concern is obviously keeping my saves intact.

If your games have cloud saving you have nothing to worry about.

I'm mostly concerned about older titles like Fallout 3, Witcher 1, Overlord 1, etc. Games/ports that came before the age of cloud storage was a thing.

backup and restore save ONLY latest (on monent of creating backup) ORIGINAL game files without game saves, thrid-party mods, workshop mods, personal configs...
for save all, you will use game save manager or copy-paste

this function used for move original games to another PC, it safe to move to other user that have this game on his account (game backup not save any personal data)
and for cleanup game files from mods and infected files

Check if this tool can help you:

Lots of games save to
C:\Documents\

Some save inside their steams common folder, example
D:\Games\steamapps\common\Valkyria Chronicles\savedata\76561198049812084
not sure it that gets backed up though

Should have an issue with games you've used cloud saves with.

If you want you could just install Steam on new system create it's library location via Download > Library folder

Close Steam.

Sure you can avoid the backup/restore reuirement. Just copy everything from old drives steamapps folder to the new steamapps folder. Once done load Steam and it should detect the files and work fine.

Thanks for the Gamesave Manager link. This'll come in real handy! :steamhappy:

@Seven7 and Supafly, check out my profile. >>> http://steamcommunity.com/id/greenraven

Copy-pasting individual savefiles isn't an option because I'm going to be sitting there for ages with the amount of games I'd have to go through. lol

Well, the combination of using the already mentioned GameSave Manager and just simply copying the whole Steam folder will make the transferrable rather easy and painless.
No need to use the rather slow backup system that Steam offers. Really, just copy the whole Steam folder.

Would have to agree here. simply copying the data as is works a lot better than the Steam backup system.

Although I will say I've never actually had the backup system work properly myself it has always failed and required me to download the game again. My last attempt was maybe 1.5 years ago, so maybe theyve fixed it since then

I can't say for Witcher of Overlord, but Fallout 3 (and many other games) you can back up the saves by backing up your Documents folder.

For backup Fallout 3, NV, Skyrim, Fallout 4 he WILL use copy paste game saves from Documents folder(or http://www.gamesave-manager.com ) rather than use Steam Cloud - there is bug and limit, that make backup into Cloud only 200-300Mb of FIRST game saves(1000Mb for F4).

I don't see the use of this whole backup thing. It's much easier just to download your games. Game saves are on the cloud mostly so there's no reason to backup to move the games....the amount of time it takes to compress one game you can download the game in the same time if not faster. Especially when you're on a decent connection. Most people have AT LEAST 150/150 so there's no reason not to just download fresh if you're building a new computer. I'm personally on a gigabit connection so takes me just a few minutes to download a huge game, and most of my games aren't that big so just makes more sense to download the games.

You say you don't see the point but clearly you do as you say it's not worth it if you have fast speeds. If you have fast and unlimited downloads then yes it's not really needed. Hell I can download a new game faster than it'll install from discs.

Most? Over here up speeds is usual 10% of download speed. 100mbps down 10mbps up isn't the average. There are plenty of people that get less than 10mbps doewn and only a few packages offer unlimited downloads. So your Most is based on guess work or regional specific. Either way just because some get high speeds and unlimited doesn't mean all.

So if the Backup feature doesn't benefit you then fine. But no need to brush it of as useless for those that it will actually help.

The most important thing is Windows compatibility for steam in creators update or later version. It's easier to backup and get your steam gaming data by following this guide
