How can I use a PS3 controller with steam?

I've looked up videos on how to do this but it doesn't help. When I go into big picture mode and go to setting it recognized I have a Dualshock 3 controller plugged in, but the only buttons that do anything are the R/L 1 buttons, R/L sticks, and the square button. Anybody know how I can fix this?

Enable the PS gamepad configuration support and configure the gamepad.

Not sure if old-gen controllers are supported. Only thought that Steam, Xbox One & Dualshock 4 controllers were compatable.

Its in Steams gamepad settings.

There are also programs to play with the ps3 controller on the computer.
For example ''Motion in Joy''.

MiJ is actual Chinese spyware. There are plenty of better options.

Oh, I never said it didn't work. But it phones home constantly with Thor-knows-what data.

Read before commenting. I said use DS4 as it is an younger version of DS4Windows for Playstation 3 controllers.

Is that I looked for it and only came out for ps4 controllers, I did not find anything else. Sorry if I've bothered you.
