New Modem cannot connect to Steam Network
I recently moved cross country and go new internet setup. I have an Actiontec T3200 modem that supports both 2.4 and 5 Ghz wifi. Coincedentally, I have been unable to login to the Steam network since I moved. I read today that Steam is not compatible with dual WAN routers, but it doesn't work even if i just plug into the modem. Is the modem itself not compatible with Steam, and is there a way to fix it? I have tried a number of other fixes:

Forwarding ports in the modem settings,
Changing the Firewall settings to low in the Modem
Turning off Firewall on my computer
Trying to start Steam in safe mode
Reinstalling Steam
resetting winlock in command prompt
clearing download cache in Steam

After all of these, I can now occasionally log into Steam after restarting my computer, but I lose connection quickly and cannot play any games online. The games I have currently installed and tried are Age of Empires II HD edition, and Civilization V. Both of these worked at my previous address with my old internet and modem. Any help or advice out there would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Where did you read this? Sure you read the right thing? You have dual band router, not dual wan.
I have dual wifi router and it works fine, still I use ethernet but still.

I would say contact the manufacturer of the router/modem or your ISP and ask them to help you.

First make sure that it really is your router that's the problem:
Try a different PC on the same connection. (ask a friend to to bring his laptop for example)
Try the same PC on a different connection. (easy if you have a laptop, and if you don't try to use a 3g thing on your smartphone if you can)

Try this: https://portforward.com/actiontec/t3200/ (ignore all the text about software, just follow the guide)

thank you for your advice, Forcen. I clearly misunderstood the modem being the issue. I downloaded steam onto my old crappy netbook and it logged in just fine. So it appears to be a problem on this specific computer, not with the network. however, I am unsure where to go from here, as I have already tried a number of fixes specific to this computer, such as reinstalling steam

Maybe it's your cable? Try plugging in that netbook to the same ethernet as the desktop?
Or try wifi on the desktop if possible?

I've tried my desktop both wired and on wifi. I have had some luck by adding a shortcut with -tcp in the startup. That connects me to the steam network on the home screen, but I still cannot join any online games. Thank you for the help you've given me so far, do you have any furthe advice going from here?

Thank you for the link. I will explore some of those options, and have checked others of them already. Perhaps something is blocking steam on this computer.

I helped another user with this issue before, don't think we came to another solution than the tcp thing: http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/1291817837640777904/

I would say look at what software you got on the desktop and on the netbook, the differences should help if it is a software issue. Maybe try uninstalling any security programs?

Thanks for all your help! It looks like the problem was a twice out-of-date graphics card driver. Updated it twice and steam now connects and I can join online games. Thanks for all your help!

That's real odd but I'm glad it worked out.
You should post the name and version of the driver and that stuff if you know, helps the next person who finds this on google.

You can find your current driver on Help>System Information in Steam.

Watch out for the slow client problems everyone's having today. if it gets slow then delete the web cache.

Update: it stopped working again, so I did a system restore and it works fine now.
