Xbox controller randomly disconnects during game
Using steam big picture on my HTPC but I'm having a tough time with the controller. Have tried both an Xbox 360 controller (wireless receiver) and an Xbox one controller (both wireless receiver and wired) and both are giving me the same issue.

Basically, everything is fine but the controller just randomly disconnects or freezes during a game. Sometimes for 20-30 seconds, sometimes longer and I have to alt tab out of the game to get back to the desktop.

I'm not part of the beta client and have updated all the latest drivers but I can't figure out why this is happening. I tested it on two other client PC's and both have the same issue with the controllers.

Anyone know how I can fix this? It has pretty much rendered any steam streaming completely useless. Running Windows 10 also and occurs in both steam and big picture modes.

Thanks

EDIT:
Just to clarify, when I mean disconnect, the controller is still on but all buttons including start, etc, don't respond. On the Xbox 360 controller, player 1 is still lit up and on the Xbox One controller, the guide button is completely lit also. Just that nothing responds.

If I am moving at the time it cuts out, the movement continues in that direction like it's locked. I can't stop the movement until I regain control.

Also, powering the controller off and on again does nothing. Take the batteries out, unplug it, etc, and it's still frozen/disconnected but then after 20-30 seconds, allows me to move until it disconnects a minute later.

Sometimes I completely lose it and it never comes back. Stays disconnected and I have to kill the game then kill the game on the host also.

In BigPictureMode:
Xbox360 Controller (actual) = only enable Generic type
XboxOne Controller (actual) = only enable XboxOne type

Disable all forms of Sleep / Suspend in the OS; such as USB Suspend

Thanks but nothing worked.

I'm using Left 4 Dead as the test game as it's an FPS and quick a to get into and don't know why when streaming it's cutting out. Just now it cut out and never came back, even the keyboard was shut out and I couldn't exit the game without alt tab and killing it. Then it's still running on the host.

Weird thing is this is only occurring via in home streaming. When I run Left 4 Dead or any game fully downloaded on the client PC, it works fine with zero freezes/disconnects. Steam streaming is somehow locking up my controls on all client PCs. I've tried three different ones now and all the same result.

Yea that's problems with your system then, clearly something else is the issue, nothing to do with Steam if you are having USB ports cutting out and such.

Wipe out ALL your Drivers and redo them fresh.

Is it weird that it's 'systems' though? Plural?

I just reversed and streamed from my client to the host PC and I still had the same issue. That's four systems I've tested all with the same issue. All clients are Windows 10 so I'm guessing it's some kind of issue there as two of them are just about fresh installs fully updated.

Problem is usually Drivers... People are not installing all their drivers.
If you did not manually install a driver for something, then it's usually wrong, or generic.

Driver Checklist; "Did I install these myself?"
> Motherboard Chipset, SATA, AHCI, USB
> GPU (remember, use DDU, otherwise Windows Updates will do forced updates and replace GPU Drivers)
> Audio
> LAN
> USB 3.0

I'll definitely try that then as I'd like to get this working. Otherwise might just go get a steam link and be done with it.

Late here so I will try tomorrow but thanks for the suggestions so far.

Steam Link just streams games from Host Gaming PC; to which the hardware (like Controller) has to be installed on the Gaming PC anyways.

I can't figure it out and it's frustrating.

Driver fixes having no effect. I even fresh installed Windows 10 on a netbook and still the same issue. Every single controller seems to do the same thing. Just connected a PS2 controller with adapter and 10 seconds in, I lose all control and nothing works. Have to use the keyboard to exit the game.

I don't understand how four PC's are having this issue with steam streaming even after fresh installs. I'm not sure if I have a bluetooth controller around somewhere but I guess I could try that.

You tried it without Steam Link in the mix of things?
jb33 Jul 11, 2017 @ 7:34pm
I don't have a steam link. Was just thinking of getting one if I couldn't get this working.

All PC's used are fully updated Windows 10 machines.

Think I just confirmed it's a steam issue.

Set up gamestream and downloaded Moonlight on my client. Controller works fine in all test games, no disconnects, no inputs unrecognised, no issues at all. Seems the only issues are when using steam streaming.

I assume that means that it's not an operating system or driver issue given there are no problems when streaming with Moonlight? Now to figure out why steam is doing this to me but I can't find any options to fix it either.

I think this is related to the most recent client update (7/11/2017). I also started having this same problem yesterday. Came here looking to see if anyone else did too.

I only experience it with in-home streaming. Happens on mutliple PCs. Xbox 360 controller on one PC and xbox one controller on another PC.

To restate the issue: the controller inputs will lock up. I'm usually playing rocket league, so if I'm at full throttle and turning when the issue occurs, it will lock at full throttle and turning in that direction. Keyboard inputs continue to work fine, i.e. I can still type in chat while the game thinks the controls are locked to those inputs. Closing the streaming game and starting it back up seems to fix it temporarily, as it will usually lock up again in a minute or two.

Same issue here since 07/11/17
In streaming mode both my xbox 360 controllers stop working after 2mins and start to work again randomly. Unplayable at the moment

Steam issue. I was playing a permadeath run in Deus Ex when all of sudden the controller didnt work anymore (no workaround, driver refresh and so on and so forth), i had to play the whole game again because of that. :2016imnotcrying: Other games have the same issue. Maybe the Lord hears our sorrow.

Same here been streaming and using a 360 controller for years mostly with no problems. Came to play the other day and now getting the disconnection after a few minutes. It might queue up and perform actions a few times before becoming totally unresponsive.
After looking around, it appears as though the latest build borked something. Seems to be occurring with both Link and modem/hub connections.
Annoying because I'm unable to play using a keyboard due to disability.
Yep, same problem here. Only started doing this in the last day or so totally out of the blue. Experiencing the same disconnecting issues others have mentioned here, really annoying.
