Opening a steam game shortcut will instead open "Print"
Hello, I've been having this problem for around a month or more now.
When I try to open a game shortcut, it will instead open a print dialog.

Here is a GIF showing what happens: https://i.imgur.com/gjmYnQ2.gif

At the beginning in the GIF, I have the "Properties" window of the shortcut open. Then I close it and double-click on the shortcut, which then opens the printing tab...

I have my steam folder in the D:/ drive, but didn't have this problem for many months, it just came randomly one day. I've been looking for solutions all over the internet (went pages after pages in google results), but nothing has helped yet. This problem is only for Steam games, all other desktop icons/shortcuts are working correctly.

Does anyone have a clue how this can be fixed? I think it's something with Windows not being able to "recognize" that the shortcut has to be opened with Steam and instead opens a print dialog? That's my guess, at least.

This is one of the only threads where I saw people having a similar issue (it was not resolved): http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1723121

The exact same thing has been happening to me a while now, I think maybe it has something to do with having Steam in the D:/ drive, plus some Windows 10 updates.

I'm using Windows 7 myself. Perhaps steam doesn't recognize it when it's in D:/ drive indeed... Really looking for someone who can give me a solution, I'm having this problem for MONTHS now and can't open games from Desktop...

You need to repair the shell association for URL shortcuts. I think the easiest way would be if someone would export his registry entries so you can import them.
You need to fund out how it came to this though so you can prevent is from happening im future.

I doubt this problem would happen if you create a fresh shortcut which may possibly help.

And shortcuts go by a *.lnk extension.

i'm use W7, and allways use steam on another drive \ partition: never get problems with shortcuts... looks like broken registry \ .lnk infection

The only way I can make the shortcuts work is to go in the 'steamapps/common' folder and just for example create a shortcut for 'csgo.exe' with right-click. The steam-created ones don't work though, I think they are links like "steam://launch" or whatever they are.

When I have a steam-game link that I click on from the web (for example to click on an URL that will let me inspect an item in-game in CS:GO), then the links work...

Hey, I got it! https://1drv.ms/u/s!AlN7g8lbRD78kr5XLyBWueetz57GgA is a REG file for Steam's standard URL association. See if importing it helps!
