Convert into gems...
Hi! My friend recently traded me a csgo case and I have been told that i can turn it into gems in order to get the badge. The question is, how do i turn it into gems?

Only steam trading cards can be turned into gems.

Well, is it worth it or should i just buy some cards and just turn them into badges?

Find the cheapest piece of crap card, emote, or background and yes, convert it.

In fact, emotes and backgrounds generally yield more gems than cards.
I have deathwing cards, emotes and backgrounds. The card is worth 16 gems while the emotes and backgrounds are 80 each.
