Can't rename games anymore!
Since last year I've been using a script I made to rename games in appinfo.vdf before Steam starts so I'd not be stuck with stupid "©", "™", "Tom Clancy's", all caps "HITMAN" or "Game of the Year Ultimate Edition" but it seems some ***** developer found it was too convenient and tidy and decided to mess it up so now the appinfo.vdf is repaired everytime Steam starts so it doesn't work! Setting the file to read only still changes it!

1) Why?
2) How can we rename games now?
3) WHY???

Usually because they want them to appear uniform and in the 'correct' order.

Star Wars
Star Wars III
Star Wars 2TM

etc.

Redirect the steam cloud servers to a local proxy and dump the ones for verifying appinfo.

Because of all the reasons I said in my first post.

Yeah, that was annoying when direct renames stopped working... for the past 5 or 6 years I've been using a tool I made to somewhat automate making changes to game names (among other things). And then that broke in January as well. Well, I've managed to get my tool working again, and thought I'd share it with the world, instead of just keeping it for my own use (turns out more people have been doing similar things). Games can still end up resetting occasionally when their data gets updated, but for the most part the edits stick; and if something does reset, the program remembers what changes you made, so just re-run the program and reapply it.

I actually released it a couple weeks ago, with a couple posts on reddit, but I just put out an update, and thought I'd spread the word a bit more. If you want to give it a try, check it out at my website[steamedit.tg-software.com] . It's a free download, so that's cool :) There's some sort of instructions there, hopefully it's simple enough to use :)

Hey, Tim. Thank you for this nice little tool. I needed something to edit launch options of steam games.
Thanks to you finally we managed to run Doom 2 through source port executable instead of default bat file and Steam Overlay now works again, yay! :B1:

Though I don't understand why your tool is working and direct editing of appinfo.vdf in Notepad++ not.

Any info on the legality of this? I mean -proper- info, not just "i think its okay"

Veterinar, would you please show (explain as much as possible, even if you need to make a guide in the Doom II discussions community with pictures) how did you get this feat to enable the overlay of this game?? It would be a GREAT HELP to you with world unity and we would be eternally grateful to you! Really!

I tried to do it myself and unfortunately I did not succeed. :(

I had a problem where when steam went to launch it had the file path wrong, so I had to set the executable in Steamedit to just the executable itself (Steamedit was automatically adding in the whole file path) Once I did that it worked.

Other than that just put the program you're using in the "base" folder inside the Doom 2 folde, along with any mods/wads you want to use. You can delete or leave all the other dosbox files, it doesn't matter (steam will probably redownload them anyway).
