Turn off On Screen Keyboard?
I'm trying to play PS4 games using the PS4 Remote Play app but left clicking on my DS4 keeps opening the stupid steam keyboard and messing stuff up. I read that there's an option to change it if I have the beta version of steam but I see no options, even in the opted beta. I'm not in big picture mode because I'm not playing a steam game but I still want to be able to chat with my steam friends so I can't just exit steam.
Am I missing the option? Is there any other way to disable it? It is literally useless to me so a full disable would be nice.
Please help!

I realize this is months later, but go to BPM and under "controller" there are three options for settings. The second one: "base configurations" will let you customize how the PS4 controller behaves in different scenarios.

The "desktop configuration" is where the on screen keyboard setting is located. This drove me nuts when I was trying to play a non-Steam game a while back. I think it was DA:I and I was using a third-party software to convert the DS4 inputs in to Xbox inputs, but Steam kept thinking I was using an Xbox controller in desktop mode and wanted to open the keyboard every time I clicked the stick. I just ended up closing Steam while I played that game and this trick would have helped me out quite a bit.

Alternatively (although I've not tested this) you could "add a non-Steam game" to your library and launch PS4 Remote Play from there. Steam might consider it to be a game and read your controller inputs as

Anywho, thanks for being one of the top results on Google for my problem, you made me go back and comb through all of BPM's settings. I hope this helps!

So to make thing simpler:

Settings > Controller > Desktop Configuration > (Left Analog Setting) > "Click Action" > press [Remove]

FYI, Controller need to be connected to be able to open that Settings
Thanks I didn't even see the keyboard pop up in the settings in the left until you said it

Wildly helpful, thank you all. I just outright disabled controller input in desktop config.

How do I remove this ugly on screen keyboard when using Xbox controller? It literally occupies 1/3 of my screen and no way to close it except exit Steam and the game entirely then restart. Why did they add this horror?

Found a way. Go to Settisngs, click on Controller then choose Desktop Configuration then select the assigned button that brings up the Steam Keyboard, upon clicking that button a on screen keyboard will appear with a few icons on the top right corner, select the icon that looks like a “Stop sign” go back and you good to go.

There is no such thing as "Desktop Configuration" or "Base configurations"

That's because steam changed everything.
The new method is (you dont' need to be in BPM either): Settings > Controller > Scroll to Desktop Layout and click Edit > Edit Layout > Joysticks > Click the Cog next to "L click" > Remove Command (Or you could change it to a different command)

not even this latedst comment works.. there is no scroll and when i click the only button for destop layout edit i get this window that says...

current layout.
game.
games built in gamepad support.
browse community layouts for games without official controller support.
no controllers detected.

nothing no disable button which is sooo stupid and lazy.

under keyboard settings again no disable button. but is an option to choose which keyboard to use. but even if i turn them all off i still have this crap pop up and annoy the crap out of me. even tured off all gamepad related setting still nothing.. they have all these options but not one single simple button to disable..

this is what i hate about a lot of products.. they are made so stupidly hard to understand and over complicated. people cant seen to work out easier ways and make things simple to use and understand. this idiocy makes me way more frustrated than i should be.

There is a simple way to disable it! You can disable controller support from Big Picture Mode while you're using non-steam apps, or you could close Steam itself so it doesn't mess with controllers while playing other apps

dont know if thats been changed recently but i cant do that either. there is no option anywhere for that. if im somehow just not seeing it please explain.. i need it openn to play games dont i? besides i need it open to write stuff here. or go to the actual web site which i find is silly, its making it harder than it needs to be. opening browser is not hard obviously but you get the picture. i dont even have a controller, im on pc.

Looks like people are still having trouble?

I looked it up and discovered the keyboard was popping up whenever I pushed in the left stick on my controller (L3) because of the Steam application running in the background. I have overlay and big picture mode turned off and it was still happening. This is what I did to solve the problem. I hope it can work for you.

- Go to the top left of your Steam page and click it, then go to Settings and click on that.
- In Steam Settings, click on Controller.
- Scroll down to Desktop Layout and click on Edit.
- Click on Edit Layout.
- On the left, you will see Joysticks. Click on that.
- Scroll down to Left Joystick Behavior and you will find L click.
- Select the gear next to L click and you will see a dropdown menu.
- Click on Remove command.
- Close all of those settings and test out pushing in the left stick. Does the keyboard come up anymore? If not, then it's succeeded.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thank you

For the record if the controller layout opens then closes, it's possibly because you haven't connected one of your steam-recognized controller.

I had to connect both before I could open the menu to disable it for the second controller I just acquired.
Apparently Steam had the bright idea to disable desktop settings while you’re streaming, yippee! I use touch controls and I just wanted to disable the keyboard gesture but I guess that’s too big brain for Steam to ever implement.

I haven't tested it yet, but I just read there's a launch option* to disable it permanently:

-NoKeyboardUI

The only drawback is that it's a per-game solution, so you'd need to include it on every game you want to fix.

*Game settings -> Properties -> General -> Launch Options
