I can't delete the steam folder
I am trying to start over from scratch with Steam. I have uninstalled everything from steam, but the folders are still there. I cant delete the folders or anything because it says i dont have permission. I dont know what else to do.

Open up task manager and kill anything related to steam. Then try it.
Thanks this worked!

Hi, I just had the same issue with my girlfriend's computer when she was trying to remove and re-install. Turns out the solution for her was to go into the steam folder and delete any sub-folders within each folder. It is an annoying process, but that allowed her to delete the main Steam folder afterwards. Turns out that even though each of the folders were empty of files, because the folders CONTAINED folders (meaning they weren't empty) it would not allow her to delete even as an administrator. Hope this helps someone out in the event you can't perform a system recovery like the above guy.

This is very tedious and just took me 5 minutes. So worth it compared to the 60 minutes i spent trying to change properties etc. before. Thank you!

I couldn't delete Civ 6 and Civ 6 DX12 files on my laptop (in the win64steam folder) even when I thought I killed all steam related apps etc.
This however did work for me (note you won't have internet etc to write down the below steps to reverse them).

Selective Startup
Press Windows Key+R.
Type msconfig and press Enter.
Select Selective startup and uncheck Load startup items.
Select the Services tab.
Check Hide all Microsoft services.
Note: Skipping this step may prevent your computer from rebooting correctly.
Click Disable all.
Click Apply then click OK.
Click Restart.

Then go to the folder you can remove the items now.

Reverse the above steps
Press Windows Key+R.
Type msconfig and press Enter.
Select Selective startup and check Load startup items. (if it didn't already do that)
Select the Services tab.
Check Hide all Microsoft services.
Note: Skipping this step may prevent your computer from rebooting correctly.
Click Enable all.
Click Apply then click OK.
Click Restart.

These steps worked for me with many issues of not being able to delete a file.

That's silly, none of that has anything to do with Steam or File Permissions.

This was the only thing that worked for me. I am the only administrator on my gaming PC.

It doesn't matter, u do not have admin rights to anything within system folders like "program files"

Its why I've always suggested you never install things like Steam/Games in there; install to C:\Steam and you will never have such issues with file/folder permissions.

Start yur computer, move the folders inside steam folder to desktop. delete steam folder, restart your computer then delete the files in desktop.

Now you can install steam again, or install it before delete desktop files if you have any problem.

That's not the reason, it's due to permissions in Windows.
Don't put Steam in Program Files and you wont have this issue.

I just had this problem, I had the install folder on my desktop cause I had no idea where to put it and it's been there for a while. I was totally unable to delete or move it, always trying something new. What worked for me was I deleted steam, from the "steam uninstall" in that file. Then after that was done, I reinstalled it, but when it asks where to download the file, i scrolled down and deleted the already pre-existing Steam file from before in the window where you browse where you want it downloaded, and that deleted the install file I had on my desktop automatically! Hope that helps, that's exactly what I did to figure it out.

I had the same problem, in particular with Kerbal Space Program, and I found the following solution:

I can confirm this solution works. I've just had a similar problem with igfxem.exe locking the folder. Killing t his process helped.

As above mentioned I killed the igfxem.exe process tree and I was immediately able to remove my steamapps folder and delete the rest. Do this first it is the most simple and efficient solution.
