How do you view items on the market that currently have 0 for sale?

Am I misunderstanding the question? I just searched for a rare item which happens to have zero availability and I was able to place a buy order:

Valve items and regular items (emotes, backgrounds, etc) are treated differently with regard to what the op is saying. If there are no items for sale you cannot place a buy order on Valve items

Well it turns out not to be the case, but can you relieve me of my ignorance by giving an example of a 'Valve item'? I've not come across that term before, and if it's sold on the Community Market I can't imagine why the store page would exhibit different behaviour.

I was mistaken. You can place on Valve items even if none are for sale. By Valve item I meant any TF2, DOTA2 or CSGO item that are unique and not listed in a batch. Even though there may be many of them, they are still listed individually.

Probably the best example would be a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive skin, or a Dota 2 item. Basically any item where each version of the item is considered unique, and instead of seeing the number of items listed and buying from whomever started selling first, you see a list of every seller and choose who to buy from.

Saw this problem a while back with a user who wanted to buy a Team Fortress 2 item. The behavior was as described by Silversun ✴ Moon 0430; because the item had no sellers, they could not place a buy order.
