Valid/Invalid Key

So I have a key & wanted to make sure the key was valid. I already own the content but was trying to see if the key was valid & entered it.

To my knowledge, the key doesn't get redeemed if I already own the content, (it said something like "your account already owns this content") but I was curious if this is confirmation that the key is valid.

A friend told me even if you enter invalid keys, they say "your account already owns this content" despite it being invalid. Is this true?

It proves that the key is for whichever game that it says it was, in that sense it is "valid".

What it doesn't show is whether or not the key has previously been redeemed.

If you enter an invalid key (which does not register as a key and never was), it'll say that the key is invalid and nothing else.

If you enter a duplicate key of a game you own, it'll say something along the lines of "This key is duplicate".

And yes, the key does NOT get reedem'd if you own the game and you try to use the key

Invalid key = the number is incorrect

Duplicate = key is real but already redeemed

If you own the content but try to redeem it with a different key; it will just say you already own it but the key will be able to be used on another account.

Unless there is a slight difference between the content you own and key, in which case it registers Pre-order bonus, dlc, soundtrack, deluxe edition, pack of backgrounds, different distribution region, the tiniest thing can swallow the whole key.

No, it was a dlc code I bought on accident from a shady guy & I already own it, was making sure it was still ok before I try to re-sell it

If you already own that DLC, then it's impossible to know if the key has already been used until you try to redeem it on an account that doesn't own that content. I wouldn't risk selling it.

No way to check if the key wasn't redeemed without redeeming it (and losing the key). Also a key from shady guy may be revoked later.

I'm selling to someone through steam who doesn't have the content. If the code is invalid I can always get a refund from the guy. Through the retailer he sold me it through, if it's invalid they side with the buyer, not the seller
