Cannot delete game folders from steamapps/common/
Hi guys,

I have this problem since I bought my laptop back in September, and I really want to solve it, but to no avail.

The thing is, when I click on Steam to uninstall game, it does so, but the whole folder stays in steamapps folder, and when I try to delete it it says access denied and I need admin rights, though I am admin.

I can only delete folders when I restart my computer, and then I can only delete folders which are empty

(DATA/meshes/grass/ - I need to delete 'grass' folder then 'meshes' and then 'DATA', but when I try to delete 'DATA', I cannot because there are folders inside)

I am on Windows 10 btw.

I just had this problem trying to delete Kerbal Space Program leftover files. The game and steam is installed in Program Files right? The problem is steam locks it's files in program files when you launch it.

To fix: restart your computer, do NOT start steam, then delete what you need.

For some reason, once started steam will lock down the files till you restart the computer.

Edit: I heard that this problem only happens when installing steam and it's games in Program Files folder, but moving everything is a pain...

Well, I keep my steam folder outside program files, in whole other partition, heck, on whole other drive.

How odd that I've been having the exact same problem for the exact same game plague me today... basically tried everything to delete it and the damn folder won't delete!!!

I have this exact same problem and setup. I run an NVMe for my main OS [Win 10 Pro][Domain Joined also], and a 250GB SSD with all my steam install and games. Those are the only things on that drive. I really hope a solution is found for this as it is a huge time sink and disk space eater.

SUPER BUMP!

I got it to work by booting into safe mode and deleting the folder through there.

I will try that today and share my results. I did try disabling steam auto startup, but the folders were still locked.

I have this problem. Instead of deleting the folder, it deletes the folder's owner, and you're screwed. When I have this issue, I use the Unlocker tool, right click on the folder, unlocker, clic delete - it will say that it can't and asks if you want to delete on reboot. Agree, and reboot your computer.

That's what I had been doing, I resolved this by finally reformatting both my hard disks, and re installing windows and steam.
