Steam Freezing when connecting controller
Hi there,

As the title says, my steam will randomly freeze when I connect my Xbox One controller. Doesn't matter if it's wired or wireless, as soon as I turn it on, steam freezes and the controller becomes unresponsive. I've already re-installed both the controller drivers and steam but with no succes. I have the option enable to start the ingame steam overlay in Big Picture mode when a controller is detected but this also isn't always working...

Any help is welcome

Do you have a Corsair keyboard? Try unplugging it. Then try to connect your controller (either wirelessly or plugged in)

Assuming that fixed your freezing...

If you don't have CUE installed. Try installing the latest; it installed a new driver for the keyboard and solved my issue of my controller freezing when plugging it in.

Same problem with both my controller and my wireless mouse

I had uninstalled CUE completely and just today my whole Steam froze again when connecting my controller. Only thing installed is Corair Driver package, Corsair Link 4 for my liquid cooler, and Corsair Link USB dongle Driver

When steam freeze I unplug and plug my strafe keyboard and it stop freezing

Yeah I figured that out too, but it shouldn't even be happening in the first place...

Same statement for me, but I'm glad it's not happening to me only, we should make a thread on corsair forum man

I just made one yesterday hahaa ( http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?p=899462 ) I really hope someone comes along to help. I'm not really sure if I posted the thread on the right subject so feel free to make a thread yourself. Maybe we get noticed better if multiple threads show up.

So I've been having the same problem for awhile now, and I've managed to fix it. Not sure if it's a temporary or permanent fix, but this is what I did:

1. Go to Device Manager
2. Go to Human Interface Devices
3. Uninstall Corsair Composite Virtual Input device driver

I haven't found any functionality losses from deleting that device, and it seems to fix the problem. Definitely try that if you have a corsair keyboard and are experiencing this problem

Hope that helps.

soooooooooooo, this has been a huge problem for me. two years strong now as well.
i today have finally solved my issues. unfortunately i am certain you need multiple hard drives. I use a dedicated drive for OS. steam, corsair ect. on the other drives. at the start of it steam and CUE were on the same drive together (not the OS drive). This is where the problem was. with steam started, plug controller in. steam freezes with any game launched for roughly 3-5 mins. after that it would work fine, unless the controller or anything else died or got unplugged. Any ways, to fix this problem -

1. have more than one drive
2. install steam to a more general use drive(non OS)
3. install CUE to the same drive as the OS.

i know its a simple, some what pain in the ass fix. possibly steam and cue are fighting for priority accessing drivers, idk. i can confirm no freezing issue since. first tested by ripping the batt out of the controller for the most abrupt driver changes. everything worked fine. cheers!

sorry for the necro but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, thank you so much @jsmelly

been having issues launching dark souls 3 and Dark Devotion. Constant freezing after logo's, white screen to black screen on dark souls 3, and every time I would try and load in a new area, Dark Devotion would just freeze up for a solid 20 seconds. doing what you said immediately fixed my issue with Dark Devotion. I'm not sure about DS3 but I'll check it eventually. thank you SO much, man.

EDIT: ♥♥♥♥, it seems like I spoke too soon, it started up again shortly after. god, this is so confusing, I just want my damn game to work. I've had a few temporary fixes. Uninstalling and removing my controller driver, doing what @jsmelly suggested worked for a couple of minutes as well. I'm updating my iCUE right now, so hopefully, that has an effect. The suggestions posted here worked for a little while, but only temporarily. (https://steamcommunity.com/games/718590/announcements/detail/1626272888443463167)
I just wanna play my damn games without issue. If y'all aren't pissed at my necro and wanna help, I can provide any other info you need, such as things I have tried, things I haven't tried, PC specs, etc.

Holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥. I just spent over 10 hours trying to fix this and this, out of all things worked.
I would never have thought that something as simple as unplugging my keyboard would fix it.
Thanks dude:cupup:
