Used Game CD Key
Did try to search but am doing bad searches or something.

Anyway, I was browsing through a thrift store today and saw they had the newest Doom for $5. I figure that's a hell of a deal so I bought it. However, when I got home and tried the CD key, it told me the key was already used and I need to log into the account that uses it.

So it seems like somebody installed the game, has it linked to their Steam account, then donated the game.

My question is, is there a legitimate way I can get a key for this game that doesn't require me me to outright buy the game via either steam or another similar service?

No, there is not. Once a key has been used that game is forever bound to that account and worthless for anyone else. There is no way to get this key working again and Steam will not disclose any information on which account the key was used.
Bring the game to where you bought it and get your money back.

If you want the game you have to buy it new at retail, from Steam direct or from a authorized key reseller shop. Only options.

This is when I learned my lesson not to buy pc games in thrift shops. I once bought a pc game for counter strike source. Had a game code. Tried it. Doesn't work.

You're better off buying it in the steam sales man.

Well you still can buy used pc games.... as long as the game does not need Steam/Origin or Uplay. Older pc games from the 2000s will still work with the included serial key, even as a used copy.
But yeah, nowadays its basically impossible to find a 2nd hand copy of a game that will still work.

What a helpful post and a great reason to necro a years-old thread. Well done. :steamfacepalm:

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
