Can't see friend online no matter what I do but can join his game from viewing his profile

That is true but normally you are viewered offline on your profile too when you do that. At least i believe so.

Does it make a difference they are from Australia and I am from the US ?

So is his profile saying he's online and in-game he is not showing? Your post is unclear

Yeah but his profile says he is online in game but on my friends list he is not showing as online at all. He has before when he first added me.

Then he has set his chat to offline.

Are you sure I thought if you set your chat to offline you appear offline in your profile too ?

I was just reading that this can sometimes be because either of you might be using a VPN. Do you know if this is the case?

It is not fixed though. Once I restart steam he appears offline again.

I am not using a VPN.

Ok this is interesting I see him online on my mobile steam but not my desktop steam.
