Can't launch mass effect
Please help as i am going insane. I have changed .exe files to 'run as administrator' and XP service 2, and then service 3.
Every time i click play on mass effect it starts to load and then crashes, saying 'a problem caused the program to stop working'.
I've looked at other forums but everyone says run as admin and that's it. I've just brought the game and i'm mad now feeling like i've wasted money and i can't play it.

It seems like something local as mine starts up just fine on Windows 10... just a FYI.

Did you try this fix from Steam's Mass Effect forum? It appears to have helped some people.
mirHL has Mass Effect Feb 3 @ 4:33am

I downloaded the driver from the last comment, tried different compatability changes and still nothing. I changed it back to S2 and this time instead of instantly crashing the screen just goes black. I have to escape and then a pop up quickly closes, but it goes too fast to read.
Turns out i forgot the obvious, i have 2.10GHz (2CPUs). That's not enough right :/
Go to Steam>Help>System Information. Copy all the text in here.
It's a general fault error. I give up :(
Can my laptop run mass effect
My laptop has:

Windows 7
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz
4GB RAM
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

I know it's an old laptop but i've played games on here before, and ME1 is old too...

I load ME and it crashes saying 'general protection fault' so i don't know if specs are the reason or something else.
WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 USERS: Launching “Mass Effect” from Steam requires the setting “Run as Administrator”. If the User Account Control feature of Windows Vista is enabled, launching “Mass Effect” from Steam will result in failure. For users with User Account Control enabled, launch Steam using the “Run as Administrator” option or launch from the windows shortcut.
I run as administrator and have changed compatability. It doesn't work.
Not with that videochip. Even an old game like Mass Effect 1 will not run properly on that piece of crap.
It predates the Intel HD videochips which were the first made by Intel that properly support DirectX and especially Direct3D features. The chips like the one you have were slow, buggy and utterly poop.
The Intel HD chips are still nothing to write home about but they're leaps and bounds better than the crap you have in your laptop.

Thanks for the kind words. Is there no way to replace this?
No, you cannot replace or upgrade it, you need a new machine. This will also be a good opportunity to upgrade the OS to, say, Windows 10.

If you purchased Mass Effect within the past 2 weeks, I suggest you stop playing it and request a refund. Attempting to run it over and over will eventually push you over the 2 hours mark and a refund will no longer be possible.

Thank you, i brought it a few days ago and have just requested a refund.

I guess i'll look for the ME PS3 bundle or look into gaming laptops now then.
