Did you try this fix from Steam's Mass Effect forum? It appears to have helped some people.

I know it's an old laptop but i've played games on here before, and ME1 is old too...
I load ME and it crashes saying 'general protection fault' so i don't know if specs are the reason or something else.
It predates the Intel HD videochips which were the first made by Intel that properly support DirectX and especially Direct3D features. The chips like the one you have were slow, buggy and utterly poop.
The Intel HD chips are still nothing to write home about but they're leaps and bounds better than the crap you have in your laptop.
Thanks for the kind words. Is there no way to replace this?
If you purchased Mass Effect within the past 2 weeks, I suggest you stop playing it and request a refund. Attempting to run it over and over will eventually push you over the 2 hours mark and a refund will no longer be possible.
buy new pc \ laptop or if you can't buy completely new, released after 2010-2014 at least
W10 can't work on this typewriter
Thank you, i brought it a few days ago and have just requested a refund.
I guess i'll look for the ME PS3 bundle or look into gaming laptops now then.
