Steam crashes after connecting a controller
Whenever I connect my xbox one wireless controller, steam crashes. I get the message that the steam client bootstrapper is not responding. If I try to restart steam with the controller connected, I will get the same error message and it won't load. Disconnecting the controller will usually fix the issue until I turn it on again. Restarting the computer doesn't help much either. I can usually succesfully have the controller on and steam open after a restart but the controller doesn't work in game. Restarting the controller after that point will result in steam crashing. This occurs on both the stable and beta release. At this point I'm just looking at some suggestions at new things to try. Thanks.

If it happens on the beta release then you should report it on the beta forums.

Ended up being a driver issue with the controller itself. Reinstalled and it's good.

Same issue with wired xbox 360 controller

Same issue with Xbox One S controller via Bluetooth. Went so far as to reinstall windows (fresh install), able to reproduce every time.

If the controller is connected via bluetooth, steam crashes when you attempt to run it. If you take the battery out of the controller, you can launch steam as normal.

It's 2017, steam is designed to work with these controllers, how is this even a bug?:steamsad:

Did you try reinstalling the driver like the solution above says?

It's only a temporary soluition for me. It comes back after a while. Latley, steam crashes after the controller auto-shuts off and I attempt to turn it back on.

A link to the exact driver being installed would be appreciated. To my knowledge, there is no other driver to be used other than the one that is supplied within Windows 10. On the newest version, creators update, all updates installed.

This is reproducible with a USB connection to the controller as well. As soon as it's plugged in, steam immediately crashes.

I even went as far as updating the firmware on the controller via the supplied xbox app from Microsoft. No change.

And BTW, I've done a full fresh Windows 10 x64 Home install. Direct USB clean image from microsoft. This would negate reinstalling the driver, would it not?

I scoured Google and Microsoft's site. There is no extra or newer driver to download, it's built into Windows. Removing and uninstalling the controller and reinstalling it again automatically reinstalls the newest/same driver and does not change anything, which makes sense since a Windows reinstall didn't help either.

Just curious, do you have a corsair keyboard?

if you type winver into the start menu, what version does it show? (both numbers)

Tell us if you use the steam beta or not also please.

Corsair k70 on the Desktop machine (where Steam works perfect with the controller connected, not in beta program, same version of Windows).

Laptop is what is affected:

Alienware 15R2
(i7 6700HQ, 970m, 16gb RAM)
Not in Steam beta

Versions of Windows on both the Desktop (which works) and Laptop (which has the issue of steam crashing) is: Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.483).

Going to make a video and I'll post a link to it in a bit so you can see exactly what is happening.

I will add this too, this used to work a few months ago. I used to use the laptop as a stream PC in the living room to play some games from the Desktop on the projector. No issues at all, then one day, bam, this issue came up.

Also will add, it happens on the Beta as well, just tried it. Desktop unaffected, Laptop still affected.

The other night I installed Ubuntu 17.04 and Steam. Works perfectly under Ubuntu. Can stream games, use the controller etc. At least that's a work around for now, but not ideal obviously lol.

Here's the quick video: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bzj6JjnAJZjjZVJFMjZtT2FEYlE

Might stil be rendering to 1080p, but you can download the video if you don't want to wait it out. Probably unwatchable at 360p.

I have the opposite problem. My alienware laptop is fine and my desktop isn't working right. In my research, I discovered some people potentially linking Corsair's CUE software to the issues which is why I asked.

I'll also say that your steam crashes quickly. Mine just freezes until I quit it (Steam Client Bootstrapper is not responding).
WRXVB Jul 14, 2017 @ 7:57pm
Yeah, k70 doesn't use the cue software so that explains that. That sucks though. I've found numerous threads on reddit, here in steam forums and other gaming forums with people experiencing the same issue with no fix.

I can live without it but it just comes in handy in the living room so I don't have to use keyboard and mouse on the couch. First world problem at it's finest.

If anyone comes across anything else to try, certainly respond here and I'll test it. I've made an image of the laptop so I can restore to that if it gets all messed up.
