Best surface for an optical mouse?
I just recently ordered a Razer Deathadder Elite which is an optical mouse.

Thus far, I was using a crappy wireless mouse made by microsoft (Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000 v2.0) which I believe is also an optical mouse and I just play on my table which seems to be made of dark wood but the surface is really smooth as if it had been laminated, but isnt. I wouldn't say the surface is glossy, just very smooth.

So while I was using the wireless mouse, I noticed that sometimes the mouse like 'skips' or doesn't even register at times. I moved my mouse a distance of 10cm many times as a test and my mouse doesn't consistently end on the same spot (like 3/10 times in a different spot)(mouse acceleration is not enabled).

So I was wondering whether the tracking issue was the crappiness of a wireless microsoft mouse or the surface.

In any experiment, you always want to control as many variables. Hence by using the very highly talked about Deathadder, I am assuming the mouse would not have any problems and the only source of problem would be from the playing surface.

So back to my main question, what surface is the 'best' (i.e. provides the best tracking) for an optical mouse?

If you are going to say mouse pad/mat, I believe there are different types so please define your answer. I am particularly interested in around the house surfaces.

Thanks.

I'm not very tech savvy on this thing, so I cannot really help you, but generally any mousepad would work. The one I have currently is this : https://www.amazon.com/ROCCAT-KANGA-Choice-Gaming-Mousepad/dp/B01BMERSM0 , and it's pretty good and affordable.

I prefer a cloth mousepad (currently using a Corsair mm300 extended with my g502) but it does come down to personal preference. A mousepad is better than no mousepad but whether you prefer a hard pad or a soft pad is completely up to you.

The issue with using your desk surface is that the surface isn't uniform, there's all kinds of dips and irregularities that, generally speaking, don't exist with a proper mousepad.

From personal experience, mouse pads don't work well with optical mice. I just use wood.
